Two Helicopters Collide Midair in New Jersey: One Dead, One Fighting for Life

A quiet Sunday morning in southern New Jersey turned into a fiery tragedy when two helicopters collided midair, killing one person and leaving another in critical condition, authorities confirmed.

The crash happened around 11:25 a.m. near Basin Road in Hammonton — a small town about 35 miles west of Atlantic City known for its blueberry farms and rural airstrips. Witnesses reported seeing the two aircraft flying unusually close before hearing a “massive boom” that sent smoke billowing over the treeline.

“I looked up and saw one helicopter spinning out of control — then it just dropped,” said local resident Paul Varga, who lives about a half mile from the crash site. “It hit the ground hard, and a second later, the flames shot up. It was like something out of a movie.”

Police, firefighters, and EMS crews arrived within minutes, battling heavy flames as one of the helicopters burned on impact. “Our team was able to contain the fire quickly,” Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel told local reporters, “but tragically, one occupant did not survive.”

Authorities said the second victim was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden with life-threatening injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have launched a joint investigation to determine what caused the deadly collision. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the helicopters were private, commercial, or operated for training purposes — though the area is frequented by flight schools and aerial survey companies.

“The Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management, Hammonton Police Department, and New Jersey State Police are all on site,” Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way wrote on X. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

The crash comes amid a recent uptick in small-aircraft incidents across the Northeast. FAA records show that helicopter operations in New Jersey have doubled since 2020, partly due to increased demand for aerial photography and training flights.

As investigators comb through the wreckage on Basin Road, residents of Hammonton are left shaken. “You never expect something like this to happen in a small town,” said witness Tara Morales. “It’s heartbreaking. That sound — I’ll never forget it.”
