The fallout from a deadly Border Patrol shooting in Minneapolis erupted into open political warfare on Saturday — and one of the loudest voices demanding answers came from inside the GOP.
Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy stunned Republicans by calling for a “full, joint investigation” after a Border Patrol agent shot and killed 37-year-old Minneapolis resident Alex J. Pretti during a Department of Homeland Security operation.
“The events in Minneapolis are incredibly disturbing,” Cassidy said in a brief statement. “The credibility of ICE and DHS are at stake. We must give the American people the truth.”
It was a rare break from the Trump administration — especially now, with President Donald Trump openly backing Cassidy’s primary challenger.
DHS officials say the shooting happened during a targeted federal operation in south Minneapolis. Border Patrol officers were searching for an illegal immigrant with a history of violent offenses when Pretti approached agents while holding a 9mm handgun.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who has taken a hard-line stance on federal enforcement since joining the Trump Cabinet in 2025, said the armed man “reacted violently” when officers tried to disarm him.
“Fearing for his life and the lives of fellow officers, one agent fired defensive shots,” Noem said. She added that Pretti had “two fully loaded magazines” and “arrived with the intent to inflict maximum damage.”
Sources inside DHS told reporters the scene unfolded “in seconds,” and officers believed they were “walking into an ambush.” One DHS official, speaking on background, said the operation “would have been routine if local authorities hadn’t pulled back support.”
President Trump quickly defended the agent’s actions, posting on Truth Social late Saturday.
“Federal agents had to protect themselves,” Trump wrote. “This gunman was loaded up with two extra mags. Where were the local police? Why weren’t they allowed to protect ICE officers?”
The president hinted that Minneapolis officials intentionally restricted police involvement.
“The Mayor and Governor called them off,” he said. “ICE had to protect themselves — not easy in a city where leadership refuses to help.”
The remarks came during a tense moment for Cassidy. Just days ago, Trump endorsed Rep. Julia Letlow for the Senate seat Cassidy currently holds. Letlow launched her campaign hours later.
Cassidy’s demand for a sweeping investigation immediately set him apart from other Republicans who closed ranks behind the administration.
Some GOP strategists say Cassidy’s move may be tied to political survival. A senior Republican aide told us, “Cassidy knows Trump wants him out. He’s trying to look independent, but this is gasoline on the fire.”
Cassidy’s history with Trump remains rocky. In 2021, he was one of the few Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump during the impeachment trial.
“People forget how deep that wound is,” the aide added.
Minnesota Democrats turned the shooting into a fresh rallying cry against federal enforcement in their state.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar delivered an emotional statement demanding ICE be removed from Minnesota entirely.
“I warned them this would happen,” Klobuchar said. “We told the Trump administration that more deaths would come. They didn’t listen. This is not the America we want.”
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Gov. Tim Walz, already criticized for years of strained relations with federal agencies, accused DHS of escalating tensions in a city still scarred by unrest.
A senior Minneapolis official told us, “The feds walked in here like it was a war zone. They created chaos and they got someone killed.”
The White House hit back immediately.
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Klobuchar and other Democrats of siding with criminals.
“We need dangerous illegal aliens out of Minnesota,” Leavitt wrote. “The Democrats have their priorities upside down.”
Vice President JD Vance also chimed in.
“This level of engineered chaos is unique to Minneapolis,” Vance said. “It’s the direct result of far-left agitators working with local authorities.”
Secretary Noem promised a full DHS review, insisting the agency investigates “every officer-involved shooting with the same intensity.”
Still, Minneapolis residents are divided. Some say the shooting was justified. Others say DHS is turning their city into a battleground.
One witness who lives nearby told us, “It all happened so fast. I just heard yelling, then shots. This city can’t breathe anymore.”
Another resident said, “We’re being used as a proving ground for Trump’s immigration crackdown.”
The clash over the shooting now sits at the center of a broader political fight as America enters Trump’s second term — a term defined by aggressive federal enforcement, clashes with Democratic strongholds, and brewing tensions inside the GOP itself.
The investigation Cassidy demanded could take months. But the political damage is happening now.
“Truth matters more than party loyalty,” Cassidy said Saturday.
Inside the West Wing, one senior official rolled their eyes.
“He picked the wrong year to grow a conscience.”

The sooner our representatives all get on board with the fact, immigration officers are doing what is not only necessary, but 100% required, the easier things will go.
Instead of getting crowds to interfere.
The fact that what they have to do to achieve their goals, they have to deal with people who are brainwashed to think its fine for people to come into this country without going through the proper channels, and never be held accountable.
