Walmart Sued by Customer After Bake-to-Eat Bread Expanded in His STOMACH

A Colorado shopper says a lunchtime snack turned into a medical nightmare after he unknowingly ate raw bake-to-eat bread from Walmart — and claims the dough actually expanded inside his stomach.

Jordan T. Douglas, of El Paso County, has filed a lawsuit accusing Walmart and the bread’s manufacturer of selling a product so misleading that he ended up hospitalized for three days with severe pain and nonstop vomiting.

According to the complaint, Douglas grabbed a MarketSide loaf from a Walmart in Colorado Springs on September 22, 2025. He says the bread looked fully baked, and a store-applied sell-by sticker allegedly covered the instructions that revealed it was actually a “take and bake” product.

Believing it was ready to eat, he took a bite during his lunch break — and things went bad fast. Court documents say he developed intense abdominal pain, rushed to the hospital, and imaging later showed a gastrointestinal blockage caused by “expansion of uncooked dough.”

Doctors reportedly had to insert a nasogastric tube and give him extensive testing while he remained in the hospital, where he says he endured major discomfort, missed work, and racked up medical bills.

Douglas argues Walmart created an unreasonable danger by covering important safety instructions and failing to train employees on proper labeling. He also claims Anthony & Sons Italian Bakery, the loaf’s manufacturer, failed to provide adequate warnings about eating the dough before baking.

The lawsuit says Douglas suffered substantial financial losses, emotional distress, and a major hit to his quality of life. He’s not requesting a jury trial, but he is seeking compensatory damages and additional relief determined by the court.
