A Northern California town erupted into chaos after a young teacher was put on leave for celebrating ICE in a Facebook comment — triggering threats, harassment, and a full-blown community meltdown.
Sarai Jimenez, a special-education teaching intern at MacQuiddy Elementary in Watsonville, wrote a simple message after ICE agents made an arrest in her neighborhood:
“Yay!!! We need ICE in Watsonville!! It’s been getting out of hand.”
That single line unleashed a firestorm.
Jimenez said she was instantly bombarded with hateful messages.
Some threatened to vandalize her property.
Others accused her — without evidence — of being a danger to immigrant children.
“One person told me they’d pop my tires,” she said. “They don’t even know me. Supporting law enforcement shouldn’t make me a target.”
In a district where 84 percent of students are Latino, her post spread through parent groups at lightning speed. Protest threats followed. So did calls for her firing.
The Pajaro Valley Unified School District quickly placed Jimenez on leave. Principal Sara Pearman told families the comment “does not reflect the values” of the district.
Behind the scenes, a source said administrators feared protests would spill onto campus. “They acted out of panic, not policy,” the source said.
National border-security advocates blasted the decision.
“California preaches tolerance but punishes a teacher for supporting federal law enforcement,” said Maria Holtz of the American Border Coalition. “This is political intimidation, plain and simple.”
Watsonville has long resisted cooperation with ICE.
But under President Trump’s stepped-up enforcement in 2026, agents have expanded operations in areas plagued by gang activity and trafficking cases.
Local residents quietly admit crime has worsened.
“People won’t say it loudly, but everyone sees what’s happening,” one shop owner told reporters. “ICE showed up because things are out of control.”
Jimenez said that was exactly her point.
“I love my students. I love my job,” she said. “But no one should fear for their safety over a Facebook comment supporting law and order.”
