Rambo’s Real-Life Inspiration Dies at 87

Bo Gritz, the decorated former Green Beret widely said to have inspired Sylvester Stallone’s iconic John Rambo character, has died at 87.

According to his wife, Gritz passed away peacefully on Friday at his home in Sandy Valley, Nevada. While an official cause of death has not been confirmed, she had previously shared that he had been battling cancer.

Gritz lived a life that was anything but ordinary. A Vietnam War veteran and highly decorated Army Special Forces officer who reached the rank of lieutenant colonel, he became known not only for his military service but also for the larger-than-life reputation that followed him for decades.

His name was often linked to the tough, battle-hardened image that helped shape the character of John Rambo in First Blood, turning him into a real-world figure of fascination for military buffs and pop culture fans alike.

But Gritz’s story stretched far beyond the battlefield. In 1992, he made a run for president, adding another unexpected chapter to his already headline-grabbing life. That same year, he was also tied to one of the most notorious standoffs in modern American history: Ruby Ridge. During the 11-day siege in Idaho, which ended with the deaths of Randy Weaver’s wife and son, Gritz reportedly played a key role in persuading Weaver to surrender to federal agents.

Later in life, Gritz remained active in conservative media, hosting the radio program Freedom Call on the American Voice Radio Network.

Born in 1939 in Enid, Oklahoma, Gritz built a legacy that mixed military heroism, political ambition, controversy, and celebrity-level intrigue.

His wife, Judy, shared an emotional message after his passing, writing that he had “peacefully passed” and imagined his fellow soldiers greeting him on the other side.

Bo Gritz leaves behind a legacy that was fierce, complicated, and unforgettable.
