Andy Dick is opening up about a terrifying health scare that nearly cost him his life.
The 90s comic, who has battled addiction for years, says doctors discovered what he described as “five to seven” holes in his brain after he was found unresponsive following an opioid overdose late last year.
Now 60, Dick shared the disturbing update during an appearance on Howie Mandel’s podcast, where he recalled the frightening aftermath of the incident. According to Dick, he has little memory of what happened after collapsing.
“I was purple,” he said, explaining that he was not breathing when he was found. The comedian added that the next thing he remembers is waking up inside an ambulance.
After the overdose, Dick said doctors ran a brain scan and found serious damage that is now affecting his memory. When Mandel asked whether he meant lesions, Dick said he could not remember the exact medical term doctors used, but insisted they told him there were “about five to seven holes” in his brain.
The shocking revelation comes just months after Dick was reportedly found unresponsive in December and revived with Narcan, the emergency medication commonly used to reverse opioid overdoses.
Since then, he says he has been living in a sober community where drugs and alcohol are strictly off-limits.
“They drug test you,” Dick said, adding that he is no longer using substances. “I’m not high. I don’t take pills. I don’t do anything except coffee.”
Even so, Dick admitted staying sober has not been easy. He said boredom is one of his biggest triggers and has often pulled him back into destructive habits.
“I get bored easily,” he said. “I like fun. I like a little bit danger.”
Dick’s long, troubled history with addiction has played out publicly for decades. He previously admitted he had been in and out of rehab more than 10 times and has spoken candidly about using alcohol and drugs to cope with his emotions.
He once said he drank whether he was happy, sad, or anxious, and that without drugs or alcohol, he often felt depressed, angry, and frustrated.
The comedian has also had repeated run-ins with the law tied to substance abuse. In 1999, he was arrested after crashing his car into a telephone pole, with police later finding cocaine and marijuana. He later entered a diversion program. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drug charges in another case.
Despite his personal struggles, Dick became a familiar face in the 1990s thanks to roles in NewsRadio, The Ben Stiller Show, and movies including Inspector Gadget, Reality Bites, Road Trip, and Employee of the Month.
Now, after yet another brush with death, the once-ubiquitous comic is revealing just how severe the damage may be.
