Hollywood actress Katherine Heigl is pushing back after critics lashed out over her appearance at a charity fundraiser held at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate — an event that ultimately raised millions to rescue abandoned dogs.
The former Grey’s Anatomy star made it clear she has no regrets.
Speaking to Page Six this week, Heigl defended her decision to attend the Wine, Women & Shoes gala benefiting Big Dog Ranch Rescue, saying the night was about saving animals — not politics.
“Animals don’t vote. The only room they don’t like is the euthanasia room at a shelter,” Heigl said. “They are completely at the mercy of us, and they have no voice of their own.”
The high-profile event took place Sunday at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, where donors and animal advocates gathered to support the nation’s largest no-kill dog rescue organization. According to organizers, the evening raised a staggering $5.5 million for rescue operations.
Heigl, a longtime animal advocate who has supported numerous rescue initiatives over the years, said critics completely missed the point of the fundraiser.
“This event was about animal advocacy — something that has always been deeply personal to me,” she said. “Anyone who knows me knows that protecting animals is one of my greatest passions.”
The actress also urged Americans to stop turning animal welfare into a political battlefield.
“As a society, we should all come together to protect the voiceless and the innocent,” Heigl said. “This should not be a polarizing issue.”
Online backlash quickly followed images from the Mar-a-Lago gala posted on social media. Some commenters questioned why the actress would attend an event hosted at the home of President Trump.
But Heigl didn’t hold back when responding directly to critics on Instagram.
After one commenter dismissed her by asking, “Who even is she?” the actress fired back.
“Doesn’t matter. Do you care about animals? If so donate — time, money, attention, your voice,” Heigl replied. “It doesn’t matter who I am, only what I do.”
She added that instead of attacking others online, people should focus on causes they care about.
“The same goes for you,” Heigl wrote. “Animals might not be your thing, but I bet you care deeply about something that matters. Do your part. Don’t waste your time scrolling and making comments.”
The Mar-a-Lago fundraiser comes as the Trump administration continues expanding its push against animal abuse nationwide. Earlier this year, federal officials announced a multi-agency strike force designed to crack down on animal cruelty rings and illegal trafficking networks.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue, the Florida-based nonprofit behind the event, has become a major player in global animal rescue efforts. The organization has helped save thousands of dogs from kill shelters, disaster zones, and even war-torn regions overseas, including pets displaced by the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Heigl has long been outspoken about animal welfare and has personally funded rescue and adoption programs through the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, which she launched with her mother.
In recent years, the actress has also stepped back from the Hollywood spotlight. In 2023, she revealed she had moved her family out of Los Angeles and relocated to Utah, seeking a quieter life away from the pressures of the entertainment industry.
“I needed somewhere to escape,” Heigl said during an earlier television interview. “Some people are beach people. I’m more of a mountain person.”
The move, she explained, helped her find balance after years in the high-pressure world of Hollywood.
Now living in the mountains with her family and animals, Heigl says her priorities are clearer than ever — and defending helpless animals remains at the top of that list.
For the actress, the Mar-a-Lago gala wasn’t about politics or headlines.
It was about saving dogs that otherwise might not have a second chance.
