What was supposed to be a carefree weekend celebration turned into a nightmare that no one saw coming.
A 22-year-old groom-to-be is now facing a second-degree murder charge after authorities say he fatally shot one of his closest friends during a bachelor party in rural Oklahoma — a shocking twist that has left a community stunned.
According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Nolan Engel was arrested in connection with the death of 21-year-old Braden Uhlmann following a late-night incident at a cabin near Broken Bow on April 4.
Deputies with the McCurtain County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call just before 1 a.m. reporting a suspicious death. When they arrived, they found Uhlmann suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but it was too late.
Investigators quickly zeroed in on Engel, who had been at the cabin with Uhlmann and several others for what was supposed to be a celebratory bachelor getaway.
But what happened next reads like something out of a thriller.
Engel allegedly told officers that the group heard knocking noises coming from outside the cabin and noticed what appeared to be a shadow moving nearby in the darkness. Fearing an intruder, he grabbed a 9mm handgun and fired.
Moments later, the truth came into horrifying focus.
When Engel and another friend stepped outside, they discovered Uhlmann lying on the porch with a gunshot wound to his chest — the same friend they had been partying with just hours earlier.
Authorities say Engel made spontaneous statements at the scene identifying himself as the shooter, according to court documents cited by local reports.
The celebration instantly turned into a crime scene.
Engel was taken into custody and booked into the McCurtain County Jail on a second-degree murder charge. Despite the severity of the accusation, he later posted a $250,000 bond and has since been released as the case moves forward.
Now, what should have been the start of a new chapter — a wedding, a future — is overshadowed by tragedy, unanswered questions, and a fatal decision made in the dark.
As investigators continue piecing together exactly what led to that single gunshot, one thing is clear: a night meant for memories ended in irreversible loss.
