Fox, even though the beloved Back to the Future star is alive and still making public appearances. The mistaken tribute sent social media into a frenzy and handed Fox the perfect opportunity to mock the media giant in his trademark sharp style.

Fox, 64, responded Thursday on Threads with a darkly funny message that instantly grabbed attention.

“How do you react when you turn on the TV and CNN is reporting your death?” he wrote. “Do you… A) switch to MSNBC, or whatever they are calling themselves these days, (B) Pour scolding hot water on your lap, if it hurts your fine, (C) Call your wife, hopefully she’s concerned but reassuring, (D) Relax, they do this once every year, (E) Ask yourself wtf?”

He followed it with another line that drove the point home.

“I thought the world was ending, but apparently it’s just me and I’m ok. Love, Mike.”

The post quickly made the rounds, with many fans praising Fox for handling the embarrassing mix-up with humor instead of outrage.

According to Entertainment Weekly, CNN’s package included old clips, interviews, and a sweeping narration looking back on Fox’s legendary career. The tribute reportedly praised his unforgettable run as Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties, his star-making role as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, and his later years as one of the most visible advocates in the fight against Parkinson’s disease.

The package even described Fox’s advocacy work as his “most lasting role,” noting his humanitarian recognition from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in 2022.

But there was one huge problem: Fox is still here.

CNN later admitted the package was published by mistake and issued a public apology.

“The package was published in error; we have removed it from our platforms and send our apologies to Michael J. Fox and his family,” a spokesperson told Entertainment Weekly.

The stunning error gave critics yet another reason to slam legacy media over sloppy mistakes and apparent breakdowns behind the scenes. For many viewers, it was the kind of jaw-dropping blunder that only fuels more distrust in major newsrooms already struggling to maintain credibility.

Fox, meanwhile, appears to be doing what he has done for decades — pushing forward with grace, grit, and a sense of humor.

Just days before CNN’s blunder made headlines, Fox appeared at PaleyFest in Los Angeles for the Shrinking Season 3 wrap celebration, once again proving he is still active, engaged, and far from the grim sendoff the network accidentally rolled out.
