Top Democrat Hit with Explosive Sex Misconduct Claims

Rep. Eric Swalwell is facing a political firestorm after a former staffer reportedly accused him of sexual assault and years of inappropriate behavior, claims the California Democrat is furiously denying as false and politically motivated.

According to a report published Friday, the unnamed woman, who worked for Swalwell for nearly two years, alleged that the most serious incident happened in April 2024 after a charity gala in New York. She claimed she became heavily intoxicated while out with Swalwell and only remembers fragments of what happened next. She said she later found herself in his hotel room, where she allegedly told him “no” and tried to push him away as he forced himself on her.

In text messages reportedly sent to a friend days later, the woman said she woke up during the encounter and told him to stop. The next morning, she said she was disoriented, bruised, and bleeding, leaving her convinced she had been assaulted.

The stunning allegations have landed at a brutal moment for Swalwell, who has been trying to position himself as a top Democrat in California’s already heated governor’s race. Instead of talking about policy and endorsements, his campaign is now being consumed by questions about his personal conduct and whether more damaging claims could still emerge.

Swalwell’s legal team has gone on offense. His attorney reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to people spreading accusations that he engaged in nonconsensual sexual encounters, warning they could face defamation liability. The letter said Swalwell takes the allegations seriously, but insisted they are false and were injected into the race just weeks before voters head to the polls.

Swalwell also publicly pushed back on the claims at a Sacramento town hall earlier this week, calling the accusations a “false, outrageous rumor.” He denied ever asking women to sign nondisclosure agreements and flatly rejected allegations that he had sexual relationships with staffers or interns.

But the accusations do not stop with the April 2024 incident. The former staffer reportedly described what she said was a pattern of troubling behavior stretching back years. She alleged that shortly after joining Swalwell’s orbit, he began sending explicit photos and asking for nude images in return. She said she complied in part because she feared upsetting a powerful boss.

She also described other encounters that she claimed left her shaken, including one after a donor event in San Francisco, where she said Swalwell tried to kiss her, and another in which she alleged he exposed himself in her car and asked for oral sex. In a separate 2019 incident, she claimed she became so intoxicated after a night out with him that she later woke up naked in his hotel bed with no memory of consenting.

For Republicans and voters already skeptical of California’s Democratic machine, the allegations are likely to deepen concerns about how powerful politicians are protected while ordinary people are ignored. Swalwell has spent years casting himself as a moral voice on the national stage, especially when attacking President Donald Trump and other Republicans. Now, critics say, he is getting a taste of the same public scrutiny he has so often directed at others.

The scandal has also opened up a nasty civil war among Democrats. Some of Swalwell’s rivals quickly seized on the allegations, calling them deeply troubling, while others suggested the rumors were part of a dirty political operation aimed at taking down a leading candidate before the primary. Reports also indicated that several people had already left Swalwell’s campaign as the controversy intensified.

That leaves Swalwell in a dangerous position. Even if no criminal charges are filed and he continues denying every claim, the political damage may already be underway. In modern campaigns, allegations alone can derail momentum, scare off donors, fracture staff loyalty, and leave candidates spending more time defending themselves than making their case to voters.

The woman at the center of the accusations said fear and Swalwell’s power kept her quiet for years. She said she did not think anyone would believe her because of his influence and worried that any investigation would become public.

Now, with California’s governor race growing uglier by the day, Swalwell is facing the kind of scandal that can define a campaign and possibly destroy one. Whether voters see him as the victim of a political hit job or a powerful Democrat finally being forced to answer disturbing claims could shape the next phase of this race.
