A horrifying case out of Minnesota has left a community shaken to its core after a man convicted of murdering — and eating — his own mother offered a chilling explanation: he says he was possessed by the devil.
Eric Leif Jordahl, 26, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the savage 2020 killing of his mother, Rosalie ‘Rose’ Johnson, a respected local leader and member of the Big Lake City Council.
According to prosecutors, the attack unfolded in the family’s home in Sherburne County on July 23, 2020 — and it started over something as ordinary as a mother telling her son to go to bed.
What happened next was anything but ordinary.
Authorities say Jordahl launched into a violent frenzy, repeatedly punching, stabbing, and even biting his 62-year-old mother in her bedroom. The brutality didn’t stop there. Investigators later discovered evidence that he had mutilated her body — and consumed parts of it.
The most disturbing moment came when Jordahl’s father returned home later that morning.
He found his son in the garage, covered in blood.
“The devil exists, it’s in me, and I ate mom,” Jordahl allegedly confessed on the spot, according to court documents.
Inside the home, police uncovered a gruesome scene — body parts scattered, a butcher knife left on the kitchen table, and traces of blood and tissue throughout the house. Johnson’s body was ultimately found in her bedroom, where she had suffered catastrophic injuries to her face and head.
Despite the shocking conviction, the legal battle isn’t over.
Defense attorneys are now pushing for Jordahl to be found not guilty by reason of mental illness, setting up a dramatic courtroom showdown over whether this was pure evil — or a deeply disturbed mind spiraling out of control.
Meanwhile, the community continues to mourn the loss of Johnson, who had been appointed to the Big Lake City Council in 2019 and was deeply involved in local organizations.
Friends and family honored her memory with a bench at Lakeside Park in Big Lake — a quiet place meant for reflection, conversation, and healing.
But for many, the haunting details of her final moments — and her son’s chilling words — are impossible to forget.
