Congressman Resigns in Shame After Bombshell Accusations

Eric Swalwell’s political career came crashing down Monday after the California Democrat announced he would resign from Congress amid explosive sexual misconduct allegations that have already torched his run for governor and left his future in ruins.

The stunning decision came just one day after Swalwell dropped out of the California governor’s race, turning what was already a brutal weekend into a full-blown political collapse. In a statement, Swalwell apologized to his family, staff, and constituents for what he described as past “mistakes in judgment,” while still denying the most serious accusation against him.

“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell said, insisting he would continue to fight what he called a false allegation. At the same time, he admitted that the scandal had become too much of a distraction for him to remain in office.

He also pushed back on calls from members of Congress who were reportedly seeking to expel him, arguing that such a move without due process would be wrong. But Swalwell ultimately acknowledged that it was equally wrong for his constituents to be represented by someone consumed by a mounting personal and political firestorm.

“Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress,” he said.

The resignation caps off a staggering fall for a man once viewed as a rising Democratic figure and a serious player in statewide politics. Instead of climbing higher, Swalwell now exits Washington under a cloud of scandal, political isolation, and growing legal scrutiny.

The crisis deepened Friday when accusations from four women were made public, including a former staffer who accused him of rape. Swalwell has denied the most serious claim, but the allegations ignited immediate outrage and sent shockwaves through political circles. He is also reportedly under investigation by the Manhattan district attorney, adding even more pressure to an already fast-moving scandal.

As the accusations spread, Swalwell’s support appeared to vanish almost overnight. Congressional colleagues began discussing whether he should be removed. Key allies reportedly turned on him. Major organizations also started pulling endorsements, signaling that the damage was not only severe, but likely permanent.

By Monday, the writing was on the wall.

Swalwell ended his statement by saying he would work with staff to make sure constituents continue to be served during the transition. But the bigger picture was already clear: one of the Democratic Party’s most media-friendly Trump antagonists had gone from headline-grabbing lawmaker to political casualty in a matter of days.

For Republicans and Swalwell critics, the collapse will likely be seen as long-overdue accountability for a congressman who built a national profile by loudly targeting others, only to find himself at the center of a scandal he could not escape.
