Barack and Michelle Obama’s Hollywood chapter with Netflix may be heading for a major shake-up.
According to a new report, the former president and first lady’s production company, Higher Ground, is preparing to step away from its longtime arrangement with the streaming giant and chart a more independent path instead. While the company’s current first-look deal with Netflix has not officially ended yet, sources told Deadline that the Obamas are already planning for a future without an exclusive studio-style pact.
That development is raising eyebrows, especially given how closely the couple’s post-White House brand has been tied to high-profile media projects and elite entertainment partnerships.
Sources told the outlet that Higher Ground is expected to remain independent once the current agreement expires, rather than lock itself into another major studio deal. The company is still expected to work with Netflix on projects already in motion, but the bigger shift appears to be toward flexibility and freedom to collaborate elsewhere.
“According to sources, the deal with Netflix has not ended yet but Higher Ground is making plans to remain independent and not pursue a studio pact when it expires soon while continuing to collaborate with the global streamer on existing projects,” Deadline reported.
Fox News Digital said it reached out to both Netflix and Higher Ground for comment.
The Obamas first signed their multiyear Netflix deal back in 2018, during a period when streaming platforms were aggressively scooping up major names and political celebrities in hopes of producing prestige content. The deal was brokered during the tenure of then-chief content officer Ted Sarandos, who had previously held a fundraiser for Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign, adding another layer of intrigue to the partnership from the start.
In 2024, Deadline reported that the relationship between Higher Ground and Netflix was being extended after several years of collaboration. At the time, Netflix’s leadership sounded enthusiastic about keeping the partnership alive.
“If there’s one thing that’s defined President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s creative ambitions since we started our partnership with Higher Ground, it is their pursuit of an exceptional story that brings the human experience to light,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said in a statement then. “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Higher Ground as they continue to develop and produce more ambitious, compelling and entertaining stories.”
But now, it appears the tone may be shifting.
Barack Obama seemed to confirm that change himself during the History Channel’s special edition of HistoryTalks on Saturday, where he suggested the company is already moving beyond its Netflix era.
“We were in partnership with Netflix,” Obama said. “We’re in a process now of transitioning to a more independent future where we can work with a bunch of different studios.”
That remark instantly fueled speculation that the Obamas are looking to broaden their options as their media operation evolves. Whether this move is about creative freedom, business strategy, or changing leverage in Hollywood, it marks a notable turn for one of the entertainment world’s most politically connected production companies.
The possible split also comes at a moment when critics have increasingly questioned the Obamas’ influence, both in media and within their own party. What was once seen as an untouchable brand backed by political star power and elite industry support now appears to be entering a new and far less predictable phase.
For now, the Netflix deal is still alive. But if Higher Ground follows through on its reported plan, the Obamas may soon be trading one powerful platform for a wide-open Hollywood gamble.
