Police Lowered into Crocodile-Infested River to Recover Human Remains

A terrifying recovery mission in South Africa has turned into the kind of nightmare story that sounds almost too wild to be real. Police say an officer was lowered from a helicopter into a crocodile-infested river to help recover human remains believed to belong to a businessman who vanished after being swept away by floodwaters.

The missing man disappeared last week after his car became stranded while trying to cross a low bridge over the flooded Komati River in northeastern South Africa. By the time police reached the scene, the vehicle was empty, and authorities feared the businessman had been dragged away by the rushing water.

What followed was a dangerous search involving drones, helicopters and a specialized police diving unit. During the operation, officers spotted a small island in the river where several crocodiles were lying in the sun. But one of them stood out immediately.

According to Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter, a commander in the police diving unit, years of experience told them the massive reptile had likely just eaten. The crocodile had an unusually swollen belly and barely moved, even with drones buzzing overhead and a helicopter nearby.

That was enough to raise the alarm.

Authorities killed the animal before launching what police described as a highly dangerous and complex mission. Potgieter was then lowered from a helicopter into the river to secure the giant crocodile with a rope so it could be hauled out.

It was no small beast. The crocodile reportedly measured about 15 feet long and weighed roughly 1,100 pounds.

Potgieter later admitted the job was nerve-wracking, saying the dangerous end of a crocodile is not exactly where anyone wants to be. Still, the veteran officer completed the mission, and the reptile was flown to nearby Kruger National Park for examination.

That is where investigators made the gruesome discovery.

Police found human remains inside the crocodile’s intestines. DNA testing will now be carried out to determine whether the remains belong to the missing businessman.

The discovery only made the story even more chilling. Potgieter also said six different types of shoes were found inside the animal, raising disturbing questions about whether the crocodile may have attacked others before. At the same time, he noted that crocodiles will swallow almost anything, so the finding does not automatically prove multiple victims.

South Africa’s acting police chief, Lt. Gen. Puleng Dimpane, praised Potgieter for his courage during the operation, and it is easy to see why. Being lowered into a flooded river known to be crawling with predators is the kind of job few people would ever volunteer to do.

For now, the businessman’s loved ones are still waiting for final confirmation. But the horrifying discovery has already left many stunned, turning a flood rescue into a grim reminder of just how deadly nature can become when disaster strikes.
