All Passengers Killed After Plane Crash in the Bahamas (Video)

A devastating plane crash in the Bahamas killed all 10 people on board Friday, turning the country’s Independence Day celebrations into a scene of heartbreak and horror.

The Flamingo Air Cessna 402C went down just after 1 p.m. in a wooded area of North Andros, an island located west of Nassau, shortly after taking off from Lynden Pindling International Airport. The aircraft had been headed to San Andros when it reportedly ran into trouble in the air, according to early information from the Bahamas Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority.

Disturbing video shared on social media showed pieces of the wreckage scattered across a forested area, with debris smoldering among the trees. A section of the aircraft marked “FLX” could be seen on the ground as smoke rose from the crash site.

One person initially survived the crash but later died from their injuries, Police Commissioner Shanta Knowles confirmed at a Friday press conference. Officials said the full list of those on board will not be released until every family has been personally notified.

“We owe that to families and the integrity of the investigation,” Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis said.

Davis also delivered a somber message to the nation as officials grappled with the tragedy.

“We have mourned too many lives, we have comforted too many families and today we mourn once again,” he said, asking God to give the country strength in the difficult days ahead.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

In the aftermath of the deadly accident, the Bahamian government temporarily grounded all Flamingo Air flights as a precaution. The Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Aviation said the move came after two separate safety incidents involving the airline on the same day.

Earlier Friday, another Flamingo Air aircraft was forced to return to Nassau after the pilot reported a problem. That plane later burst into flames, but all passengers were safely evacuated.

Flamingo Air, a Bahamas-based carrier with a fleet of nine planes serving 13 destinations, has had several previous accidents over the years. According to reports, the airline has been involved in eight accidents since 2012, though none had been fatal before Friday’s crash.

In October 2023, a Beech 99 operated by the airline had its boarding door open midair while flying to Staniel Cay. In August 2016, another Beech 99 crash-landed at an airport in South Bimini after the wheel under the right wing collapsed. Everyone on board survived that incident.

Flamingo Air said it is cooperating with authorities and extended condolences to the families of those killed.

“We can confirm that an aircraft owned by Flamingo Air experienced a fatal crash in the North Andros, Bahamas, area today,” the company said in a statement.

For the Bahamas, Friday’s crash marked a stunning tragedy on what was supposed to be a day of national pride and celebration. Instead, the country is now mourning 10 lives lost in one of the airline’s darkest days.
