Long before Barack Obama entered the White House with Michelle by his side, another woman reportedly had the chance to become his wife — and turned him down not once, but twice.
Years before Obama met Michelle, he was involved in a serious relationship with historian and college professor Sheila Jager. According to a biography of the former president, the couple dated for several years, discussed marriage and continued crossing paths even after their romance fell apart.
As Obama approaches his 65th birthday, his little-known love story with Jager is once again attracting attention — including claims that his political ambitions helped drive them apart.
Obama’s First Marriage Proposal Ends in Rejection
According to David Garrow’s 2017 book, Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, Obama proposed to Jager in 1986.
She was 23 at the time, while Obama was 25.
Jager reportedly answered “not yet,” partly because her parents believed she was too young to get married. Despite the rejection, the pair remained together and continued their relationship.
But Obama would soon try again.
In the late 1980s, shortly before he left Chicago to attend Harvard Law School, Obama reportedly made a second proposal. Jager again refused.
This time, she allegedly questioned whether Obama genuinely believed in their future or was simply panicking over their looming separation.
She described the proposal as coming more “out of a sense of desperation over our eventual parting and not in any real faith in our future,” according to Garrow’s book.
His White House Ambitions Reportedly Raised Red Flags
Marriage was not the only issue hanging over the relationship.
Jager claimed Obama underwent a sudden transformation as his political ambitions intensified.
