Eric Swalwell Accused of Using Shocking Blackmail to Keep FBI Files Secret

Former Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell allegedly used a stunning piece of his own romantic past to help keep potentially embarrassing FBI records involving suspected Chinese intelligence operative Christine Fang out of public view, according to an explosive new report.

The twist rocking Washington: Swalwell reportedly once had a relationship with Katie Miller — now the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, one of President Donald Trump’s closest and most recognizable advisers.

“I was an intern working on Capitol Hill,” Katie Miller wrote on X after news of the past relationship surfaced.

Miller, then Katie Waldman, worked on Capitol Hill as a young intern and communications aide before eventually moving into the executive branch in 2017. Her reported relationship with Swalwell took place years before she met and married Stephen Miller.

But according to Sources Say, that old relationship later became part of an extraordinary behind-the-scenes battle over FBI records concerning Swalwell’s ties to Fang, the suspected Chinese operative better known as “Fang Fang.”

The report claims Swalwell’s side pointed to his “long-concluded sexual relationship” with Miller while arguing against the release of the records — warning that making them public could be portrayed as a politically motivated attempt by the Trump administration to weaponize the Justice Department against one of the president’s longtime Democratic adversaries.

Swalwell declined to comment to the New York Post about the latest report.

The controversy traces back more than a decade.

Fang reportedly developed relationships with a number of American politicians while federal authorities investigated what they believed was a Chinese intelligence operation.

Between roughly 2011 and 2015, Fang helped raise money for Swalwell and assisted in placing at least one intern in his congressional office.

Federal authorities later warned Swalwell about Fang, and the California Democrat has maintained that he immediately cut off contact after being briefed by the FBI.

The relationship became national news in 2020 and quickly turned into political ammunition for Republicans, particularly because Swalwell sat on the powerful House Intelligence Committee and had become one of television’s most aggressive critics of Trump.

Despite the controversy, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi publicly defended Swalwell, and he remained on the committee.

Years later, the issue reportedly came roaring back.

In early 2026, FBI Director Kash Patel sought to release files detailing the bureau’s investigation into Fang and her interactions with Swalwell, according to the new report.

At the time, Swalwell was still a high-profile Democrat and had been running for governor of California.

But releasing the records raised concerns inside the government because Swalwell had never been charged with a crime stemming from the Fang matter. There were also worries that the release could look like retaliation against a prominent Trump critic.

That was allegedly when Swalwell’s previous relationship with Katie Miller entered the equation.

According to Sources Say, Swalwell’s camp argued that releasing the FBI material could appear politically motivated and specifically cited his old relationship with the wife of one of Trump’s most senior aides.

Miller herself reportedly had no idea her name had become part of the Justice Department dispute until a reporter informed her, according to a source close to her.

The Justice Department, however, pushed back on the suggestion that Swalwell’s lawyers influenced the decision.

A source familiar with the matter told the Post that the department was “not aware of communications from Swalwell’s lawyers regarding Miller’s presence in the files.”

“The Department investigates crimes irrespective of politics,” a DOJ spokesperson said.

The FBI files ultimately were not publicly released.

Questions about exactly how close Swalwell became with Fang have followed him for years.

Swalwell has refused to say whether he ever had a sexual relationship with the suspected operative, previously arguing that discussing certain details could involve national-security concerns.

He was unmarried during the period in question and married his wife, Brittany, in 2016.

Fang eventually left the United States while federal authorities were investigating her activities.

According to the latest report, Patel had even explored whether Fang could somehow be brought back from China for questioning about Swalwell.

The resurfaced spy controversy comes after an already catastrophic year for the former Democratic rising star.

Swalwell resigned from Congress in April after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, including sexual assault. He also abandoned his campaign for California governor as political pressure mounted.

Swalwell has denied the serious allegations against him. His resignation followed bipartisan calls for him to leave office and the opening of a House Ethics investigation.

CNN reported that multiple women described alleged inappropriate or abusive encounters with Swalwell, including a former staffer who accused him of rape. Swalwell categorically denied the accusations.

The allegations represented a stunning collapse for a politician who had spent years building a national profile through frequent cable-news appearances and relentless attacks on Trump.

Katie Miller, meanwhile, publicly sided with Swalwell’s accusers when the accusations erupted earlier this year.

“As someone who doesn’t normally believe all women, I believe her — and the many lined up behind her,” Miller wrote on X in April.

She then delivered an even more devastating assessment of her former boyfriend.

“Eric Swalwell’s behavior was the worst kept secret on Capitol Hill,” she wrote, adding: “I’m positive she was not the only intern.”

Now Swalwell’s past with Miller has become tangled with one of the biggest controversies of his political career — raising fresh questions about the still-secret FBI files, his relationship with Fang and exactly why the American public has never been allowed to see what investigators learned.
