A massive manhunt is underway in Massachusetts for the wife of a veteran police officer who was found dead inside a home — and authorities are warning that she should be considered armed and dangerous.
Police announced Friday that an arrest warrant had been issued for 58-year-old Karen Solomon in connection with the death of her husband, Worcester Police Patrolman Kurt Solomon, 57.
Kurt Solomon, a 31-year veteran of the Worcester Police Department and father of two, was found dead early Tuesday morning.
Authorities have released few details about exactly what happened inside the home, but Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier revealed that the officer suffered injuries involving a “sharp object.”
Karen Solomon is now wanted on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.
Police have not announced a homicide charge.
Investigators said Kurt Solomon’s service weapon was accounted for, but Karen Solomon is still being treated as armed and dangerous as authorities desperately search for her.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured Karen walking through the area following the incident, giving investigators one of their key clues in the growing search.
The hunt has centered heavily around Coes Reservoir, where police, U.S. Marshals and specialized search teams have deployed helicopters, divers, sonar equipment and K-9 units.
“We’re still actively pursuing this area,” Saucier told reporters Friday.
Several public areas near the reservoir, including parks, have been closed indefinitely as investigators continue combing the area for evidence and any sign of Solomon.
Search operations were suspended Friday evening after four days of searching, but authorities planned to resume their efforts Saturday morning.
Adding another disturbing layer to the case, Karen Solomon is the founder of First HELP, a nonprofit organization focused on preventing suicide among first responders and helping police officers and their families cope with mental health struggles.
The organization has worked to raise awareness surrounding suicide and emotional trauma within the first-responder community.
Now its founder is the focus of an intense police search following the mysterious death of her own husband.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a possible motive or explained what they believe happened in the moments leading up to Kurt Solomon’s death.
Anyone who spots Karen Solomon is being urged not to approach her and to immediately contact Worcester Police by texting 274637 or calling 508-799-8606.
