A routine afternoon at a busy Los Angeles Trader Joe’s turned deadly when a 91-year-old driver apparently lost control of her vehicle, killing one woman and injuring four other people.
The horrifying crash unfolded around 1:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, in the grocery store parking lot near West 3rd Street and Fairfax Avenue.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, where a woman was pronounced dead. Her identity has not yet been released.
Four other people were injured, including the elderly driver.
Three victims, including the 91-year-old woman behind the wheel, were taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Another man suffered serious injuries.
Witnesses said the driver appeared to lose control of her vehicle as she entered the Trader Joe’s parking lot. The car allegedly slammed into a parked vehicle before crashing into a parking attendant stand.
The circumstances surrounding exactly what caused the driver to lose control remain under investigation.
Trader Joe’s released a statement following the tragedy.
“We are aware of the accident yesterday afternoon near our store at 3rd & Fairfax,” a company spokesperson said. “Our store has been part of this neighborhood for 14 years, and we feel compassion for all those impacted by this tragedy.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also expressed her condolences and said members of the city’s Crisis Response Team had been sent to assist those affected.
“My heart goes out to everyone impacted,” Bass said. “I thank the brave first responders who were on the scene quickly to render aid.”
The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the deadly crash.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or charges, and investigators reportedly believe the incident was an accident.
Additional details about the woman who died and the condition of the seriously injured man have not yet been released.
