Texas Grocery Store Erupts into ‘Gunfire’ Over Dog (Video)

A routine trip to a Texas grocery store turned into a terrifying shootout after a customer was told he couldn’t bring his dog inside, leaving two men critically injured and sending shoppers scrambling for safety.

The violence erupted shortly after 8 p.m. Friday, October 9, at Great Wall Supermarket in Houston’s bustling Chinatown neighborhood, near Bellaire Boulevard and Beltway 8.

According to Houston police, a man in his 20s arrived at the supermarket with his girlfriend and their dog. When the couple attempted to enter the store, an armed security guard stopped them and explained that animals were prohibited inside because of health concerns.

What began as a disagreement over the store’s policy quickly spiraled into gunfire.

Investigators said the customer and security guard became involved in a heated argument before both men pulled out handguns and exchanged shots. Initial reports indicated that the customer fired first, although authorities are still reviewing the circumstances of the confrontation.

Houston Police Lt. Larry Crowson said officers had already been dispatched to the supermarket following reports of a disturbance. As one officer arrived, he heard gunshots and immediately requested backup.

Police discovered the customer and security guard suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery Friday night.

The terrifying confrontation also sent people at neighboring businesses running for cover.

Surveillance footage obtained by FOX 26 Houston showed customers and employees fleeing for safety as the gunfire erupted. At a nearby business, witnesses described hearing several shots after a brief argument.

One witness told KHOU 11 that she heard approximately five or six gunshots.

An officer pursued the wounded customer as he attempted to leave the scene and took him into custody, according to local reports.

The man’s girlfriend remained at the supermarket and cooperated with investigators. Neither she nor the dog was injured, and police reported no additional victims.

Authorities said there was no continuing threat to the public after the shooting.

The bizarre dispute unfolded in one of Houston’s busiest Asian shopping districts, where supermarkets, restaurants and retail businesses draw families and shoppers throughout the evening.

Texas food safety regulations generally prohibit live animals from grocery stores and other food establishments, with exceptions for qualifying service animals. Police have not indicated that the couple’s dog was a service animal.

Investigators are examining surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine precisely how the argument escalated and whether criminal charges are warranted.

As of the latest available reports, neither wounded man’s identity had been publicly released, and updated information about their conditions had not been confirmed.

A confrontation that began over a grocery store’s pet policy has now left two people seriously wounded and an entire shopping center shaken.
