‘Good Guy with Gun’ Stops Oregon School Shooter

The teenage gunman who killed three young children and a teacher at an Oregon elementary school has reportedly been identified as a 16-year-old former student, as investigators search for answers about what drove the deadly attack.

John J. Griffin II, of Bend, Oregon, was identified by law enforcement sources as the person responsible for Thursday’s shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School, according to the New York Post and The Washington Post.

The teenager reportedly attended the same school where he opened fire on October 15, killing children ages 5, 8 and 11, along with a teacher.

Another student, 7, and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured.

But one of the most striking developments involves the person who stopped the attack.

According to reports, an armed father whose two daughters attend the school followed the gunman inside and fatally shot him before police could confront the attacker.

Authorities have credited the community member with ending the violence, although his identity and the complete circumstances of his intervention have not been publicly confirmed.

The attack began shortly before 1 p.m. when a person sitting inside a pickup truck outside the school called 911 to report that someone armed with a long gun was shooting at the vehicle.

The driver survived, but the truck was left with several bullet holes.

Investigators said the teenager then climbed over a fence and approached the elementary school, where he reportedly used the weapon to force his way through locked entrance doors.

Within moments, emergency dispatchers received additional calls reporting gunfire inside the building.

Teachers and staff rushed to protect students as the school entered lockdown.

Bend police officers arrived approximately three minutes after the first emergency call.

By the time they reached the building, the suspected gunman had already been shot.

According to law enforcement reporting, Griffin used a pump-action shotgun that had been purchased by his mother.

Investigators are now examining how the teenager obtained access to the weapon and why he targeted the school.

His parents have reportedly cooperated with authorities, telling investigators that Griffin previously attended Silver Rail Elementary.

Police have also executed a search warrant at the family’s home, collecting computers and other electronic devices that could provide clues about his activities and possible motivation.

The investigation is continuing, and authorities have not established whether the teenager specifically targeted particular students or employees.

Meanwhile, the heartbreaking identities of the youngest victims are beginning to emerge.

Five-year-old Rhoam Summer, who had only recently started kindergarten, was among the children killed.

His father, Kelik Summer, shared an emotional message on Facebook after learning that his son had died.

“Today has been the worst day of my life,” he wrote.

“My son Rhoam was killed in a school shooting. We are broken and lost, but are surrounded by friends and family who are keeping us safe.”

The devastating announcement prompted an outpouring of condolences from friends, neighbors and families across Oregon.

The identities of the other two children and the teacher who died had not yet been officially released as of Friday afternoon.

The shooting has left the city of Bend, home to approximately 100,000 residents, struggling to comprehend the loss.

Silver Rail Elementary serves more than 400 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

For families, what began as an ordinary Thursday afternoon quickly became a nightmare.

Parents rushed to Journey Church, where school officials established a reunification center and transported students after securing the campus.

Emotional scenes unfolded as children were reunited with relatives, while other families waited desperately for news.

Bend-La Pine Schools canceled Friday classes and extracurricular activities throughout the district.

Later Thursday evening, hundreds of residents gathered at Drake Park for a candlelight vigil honoring the victims.

Community members sang, prayed and embraced one another as they mourned the children and teacher who never returned home.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek also praised the civilian who confronted the attacker, acknowledging the difficult circumstances surrounding the intervention.

The governor expressed gratitude for the person’s actions while recognizing the emotional burden of being involved in a deadly confrontation.

The case has renewed questions about school security, firearm access and how a teenage attacker managed to enter an elementary school despite locked doors.

Investigators are examining the teenager’s background, communications and any possible warning signs preceding the shooting.

However, authorities have not publicly identified a motive, and no evidence has established that anyone else participated in planning the attack.

A further police briefing was scheduled for Friday, October 16, as investigators continued gathering evidence.

For the families of Silver Rail Elementary, the answers cannot come soon enough.

Three children and a teacher lost their lives, two others were seriously injured, and an entire community was left grieving.

Now, with the suspected shooter’s identity emerging and investigators examining his past connection to the school, the central question remains unanswered.

Why did a 16-year-old return to an elementary school and carry out an attack that devastated so many families?
