North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has resurfaced in newly released photographs after alarming rumors spread across social media claiming the 42-year-old leader had suffered a medical emergency and died.
The images, published Tuesday, October 20, by North Korea’s state-controlled media, show Kim touring a clothing and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang alongside his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, and other government officials.
The unexpected photographs emerged just as speculation about Kim’s health was gaining international attention, raising questions about the future of North Korea’s secretive regime and its nuclear weapons program.
The rumors began circulating over the weekend after Wanjun Xie, a Chinese political dissident living in the United States, claimed on social media that Kim had suffered a severe brain hemorrhage, fallen into a coma and been rushed to a hospital in Beijing.
Xie went further, alleging that Kim had died despite emergency medical treatment and that North Korean authorities had secretly returned his body to the country while attempting to conceal his death.
However, he provided no evidence to support the allegations. Xie has previously circulated unsubstantiated claims about Chinese President Xi Jinping, including rumors that the Chinese leader had died and been replaced by a body double.
South Korean diplomatic and security officials said they had received no information supporting the latest claims about Kim’s death.
North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency did not directly address the rumors. Instead, it released photographs showing Kim inspecting clothing, shoes and other merchandise during what it described as a Monday visit to the exhibition.
Because North Korea tightly controls access to its leadership, the circumstances surrounding the photographs could not be independently verified. Nevertheless, the images and South Korea’s assessment have cast serious doubt on the sensational claims.
The developments come at a particularly important moment for President Donald Trump, who has left open the possibility of renewed diplomatic talks with the North Korean leader.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump was asked whether he expected to meet Kim during a planned visit to China in November.
“Oh, I don’t know. I don’t know,” Trump responded.
Despite uncertainty about another summit, the president emphasized that he continues to have a positive personal relationship with Kim.
“I get along with him very well,” Trump said, adding that his relationship with the North Korean leader remains “very good.”
Trump also indicated that he was unaware of any formal request for a meeting.
The president’s remarks have renewed attention on his unusual diplomatic history with Kim, which became one of the most closely watched foreign policy developments of his first administration.
In June 2018, Trump became the first sitting American president to meet with a North Korean leader when the two held a historic summit in Singapore.
They met again in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February 2019, although those negotiations ended without an agreement over North Korea’s nuclear program and international sanctions.
Just months later, Trump made history again when he briefly crossed into North Korea at the Korean Demilitarized Zone, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to set foot in the country.
Those meetings established direct communication between Washington and Pyongyang, but they did not produce a lasting nuclear disarmament agreement.
Now, with another trip to Asia approaching, the possibility of renewed talks could once again place North Korea at the center of Trump’s foreign policy agenda.
Still, major obstacles remain. North Korea has continued expanding its weapons capabilities, and Kim recently visited a military museum displaying the Hwasong-20, an intercontinental ballistic missile designed to threaten targets as far away as the United States.
Tensions have also increased along the border with South Korea, where disputes involving landmines, military activity and warning shots have raised concerns about a possible confrontation.
For Washington, the challenge remains balancing diplomacy with a strong national defense while working to prevent North Korea from advancing its nuclear capabilities.
Meanwhile, the latest death rumors have renewed questions about who would take power if Kim became seriously ill or died.
His influential younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, remains a prominent figure in the government. However, South Korean intelligence officials increasingly believe his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, is being positioned as a potential successor.
The girl has accompanied her father to military demonstrations, political gatherings and other major public events since 2022. Her appearance alongside him in the newly released photographs adds to the attention surrounding her possible future role.
North Korea has not formally confirmed a succession plan.
This is not the first time speculation about Kim’s health has made international headlines.
In 2020, he disappeared from public view for nearly three weeks, prompting widespread rumors that he was gravely ill or had died. North Korean media eventually released photographs showing him attending the opening of a fertilizer factory, ending much of the speculation.
Kim has ruled North Korea since 2011, following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il. His family’s authoritarian government has maintained strict control over the country for generations, making independent information about its leadership exceptionally difficult to obtain.
For now, there is no credible evidence that Kim has died or suffered the medical emergency described online.
But with Trump’s upcoming trip to China and North Korea’s nuclear program remaining a major national security concern, the question of Kim’s health and political future will continue to attract attention far beyond the Korean Peninsula.
