A New York utility worker was shot and killed while driving across the George Washington Bridge during Tuesday evening’s rush hour, leaving police searching for a gunman in what investigators believe may have been a deadly road-rage encounter.
The victim was identified as 46-year-old Koran Irvine, a longtime Con Edison employee from Valley Cottage in Rockland County, New York. He was off duty when the shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on October 20.
According to investigators, Irvine was driving a blue Volkswagen Golf toward New Jersey when he nearly collided with another vehicle on a ramp leading to the bridge’s westbound upper level.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured the close call, which authorities believe may have triggered a confrontation between the motorists.
As both vehicles continued across the bridge, someone inside the other vehicle allegedly fired a shot into Irvine’s car, striking him. The suspected shooter’s vehicle continued toward New Jersey and disappeared from the scene.
Irvine’s Volkswagen subsequently crashed into the center median near the middle of the bridge.
Port Authority police initially responded to what appeared to be a single-vehicle accident. When officers reached the scene, they discovered Irvine unconscious inside his car with a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in New Jersey, where he was pronounced dead.
The killing has devastated Irvine’s colleagues at Con Edison, where he had reportedly worked for approximately 20 years.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence,” a company spokesperson said. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him.”
The shooting also caused widespread traffic chaos on one of America’s busiest transportation routes.
Authorities shut down the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge for approximately six hours while investigators examined the scene and collected evidence. Traffic backed up for miles, disrupting commuters traveling between New York and New Jersey.
The bridge, which connects Manhattan with Fort Lee, New Jersey, carries millions of vehicles annually and serves as a critical transportation link for commuters and commercial trucks.
Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the vehicle and person responsible for the fatal shooting.
As of Wednesday morning, October 21, police had not announced any arrests or released a description of the suspect or the vehicle involved.
No other injuries were reported.
The disturbing incident highlights the potentially deadly consequences of confrontations between motorists, particularly on heavily traveled highways where innocent drivers can be caught in the danger.
For Irvine’s family and colleagues, what should have been an ordinary evening drive ended in tragedy. Police now face the task of tracking down the person responsible and bringing the case to justice
