Evangelicals Angered by New Harris Campaign Ad

In a desperate attempt to attract Christian voters, a new ad from Evangelicals for Harris is weaponizing a sermon by the late Rev. Billy Graham, intercutting it with clips of former President Donald Trump. The ad, titled “Keep Clear,” is designed to manipulate evangelical voters ahead of the 2024 election, pushing them to support Vice President Kamala Harris instead of President Trump.

The ad strategically uses a passage from one of Rev. Graham’s 1988 sermons, in which he warned of the moral decay that would plague the world in the last days. In the sermon, Graham said, “Men will become utterly self-centered and greedy for money. They will be proud and abusive…treacherous, reckless, and arrogant.” Evangelicals for Harris juxtapose this message with clips of Trump, including his famous statement, “I’ve been greedy, greedy, greedy my whole life,” in an attempt to paint the former president as the embodiment of Graham’s warning.

But Franklin Graham, Rev. Billy Graham’s son and president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), is having none of it. In a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter), Franklin blasted the Harris campaign and the liberals behind it for trying to hijack his father’s legacy to promote their left-wing agenda.

“They are trying to mislead people,” Franklin Graham said, making it clear that his father supported the conservative values President Trump championed in 2016. “If my father were alive today, his views would not have changed.”

The BGEA has sent legal letters to Evangelicals for Harris, demanding they cease using the sermon footage. The organization confirmed it has been in direct communication with the group over what it described as “unauthorized, political use” of copyrighted video content. Franklin Graham also highlighted that his father never publicly criticized political leaders, preferring to offer them guidance based on Christian teachings.

In response, Evangelicals for Harris argued that their use of the footage falls under fair use protections and defended their campaign as essential to highlighting the moral and biblical concerns surrounding Trump’s behavior. They claim the ad simply contrasts Trump’s own words with biblical teachings, allowing voters to decide for themselves.

While white evangelicals have been a key voting bloc for Trump in past elections—roughly 8 in 10 supported him in 2016 and 2020—not all evangelicals align with the Republican Party. Evangelicals for Harris is attempting to appeal to those disillusioned with Trump’s conduct, especially in battleground states where small shifts in voter turnout could influence the election outcome.

The broader debate this ad has ignited reflects the ongoing struggle within the evangelical community over how to balance political values with religious convictions. Trump has presented himself as a strong advocate for conservative Christian causes, particularly in his appointments to the Supreme Court and his role in overturning Roe v. Wade. Yet some evangelicals remain uneasy about his personal behavior and moral character.

As the 2024 election approaches, both sides will continue to vie for the support of evangelical voters, who could play a decisive role in determining the next president.

  1. The Bible also states “Thou Shalt not Kill.” That means murdering babies in the Womb is killing which God says we should not do. How can any Christian support Harris since she is very vocal in wanting women to have the right to kill babies in the womb from conception to term of pregnancy? We all have to answer to God in the end!
