MSNBC has ignited a firestorm of controversy by airing footage of a 1939 Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden alongside former President Donald Trump’s packed event at the same venue this past Sunday.
The left-leaning network’s choice to juxtapose Trump’s rally with scenes from the infamous “Pro-America” rally held over 80 years ago has drawn sharp criticism from conservative voices who accuse MSNBC of blatant media manipulation and incitement.
During its coverage, MSNBC aired archival footage of the Nazi rally, where over 20,000 supporters of Adolf Hitler gathered at the New York landmark.
Anchors drew explicit parallels between the two events, with one commentator stating, “That jamboree happening right now…is particularly chilling because, in 1939, more than 20,000 supporters of a different fascist leader, Adolf Hitler, packed the Garden for a so-called pro-America rally.” The insinuation of fascist undertones at Trump’s event was met with widespread condemnation.

Conservative Outrage over “Shameful” Comparison
Many conservatives were quick to point out that Trump’s rally attracted a diverse crowd that could not have been further from the ideology of the 1939 gathering. Notably, Holocaust survivor Jerry Wartski, 94, was among the attendees.
Wartski has been an outspoken Trump supporter, recently endorsing him in a campaign video where he emphasized that, as a Jewish man who endured the atrocities of Auschwitz, he views Trump as “a mensch”—a person of integrity and honor. This endorsement, combined with the rally’s cross-cultural attendance, was cited as evidence contradicting MSNBC’s narrative.
X user @amuse commented, “Yesterday’s Trump rally was filled with Americans from every walk of life, including orthodox, conservative, reform, and secular Jews. I saw a woman in a burka. It wasn’t anything like a Nazi rally. Shame on MSNBC.”
Prominent voices on social media, including Tesla and X owner Elon Musk, expressed outrage as well. Musk, who also spoke at the rally, didn’t mince words, calling MSNBC the “scum of the Earth” on his platform. Musk has previously clashed with liberal media outlets and recently accused them of fostering divisive rhetoric under the guise of progressive values.
Democrats Struggle to Maintain “Unity” Message
MSNBC’s actions cast a shadow on the Democrats’ message of unity and inclusiveness, highlighted by Vice President Kamala Harris during her Democratic National Convention address earlier this year, where she called for “a new way forward.”
Conservatives have since accused the network of abandoning that mission by making what they see as inflammatory comparisons to malign Trump and his supporters.
Supporters Defend the Rally’s “Positive Energy”
Despite MSNBC’s portrayal, attendees described Trump’s rally as an electrifying display of patriotism and shared hope for America’s future. Republican pundit Sam Mitha noted the “unmatched energy” and tweeted, “Trump had a Revolutionary Rally in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The energy was unmatched, and a promise of a better America was on the horizon.”
Mitha argued that liberal media couldn’t handle the enthusiasm and support shown at the event, instead resorting to “a propaganda campaign” that demeaned Trump’s diverse supporters.
Conservative commentator Colin Rugg also highlighted Wartski’s presence at the event, tweeting, “You don’t hate the media enough. Holocaust survivor Jerry Wartski was in attendance at the rally this evening, along with other Jews who were supporting Trump.”
A Divisive Moment in Political Media
The backlash against MSNBC underscores a growing sentiment among conservatives that mainstream media bias has reached new extremes. Many believe that MSNBC’s comparison of Trump’s rally to a Nazi gathering not only demeans American voters but also trivializes one of history’s darkest chapters.
