ESPN’s Michelle Beisner-Buck stepped onto the field at Arrowhead Stadium, visibly emotional, before the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Her return to work came just days after the tragic loss of her mother, Mary Beisner Wright, who passed away on October 29. In an emotional moment, Beisner-Buck shared that her mother was one of the most “incredible people this world has ever seen,” holding back tears as she spoke.
Despite her grief, Beisner-Buck was determined to return to work. ESPN offered her the option to take time off, allowing her space to mourn, but she chose to stay.
“My mom would want me to see this through,” she explained. Mary was a diehard NFL fan, and while she would have been cheering for the Denver Broncos that night, Beisner-Buck knew she would have been proud to see her daughter doing what she loves.
Beisner-Buck’s deep bond with her mother was clear as she reflected on the impact Mary had on her life. “She loved seeing me tell the stories of the players, getting to know the people behind the helmets,” Beisner-Buck shared.
It was clear that Mary had instilled a love for both the game and for human connection, two things that shaped Michelle’s career.
The timing of this loss was especially hard for Beisner-Buck, who had recently dealt with a serious injury. Just weeks ago, during a round of golf, her husband, Joe Buck, accidentally hit her foot with a golf ball.
The accident resulted in nerve damage and a fractured ankle, forcing her to take a brief break from her TV duties. Despite this injury, Beisner-Buck still chose to return to work, knowing her mother would have wanted her to continue.
The night before the game, Beisner-Buck shared a deeply personal tribute to her mother on Instagram. Posting a photo of Mary, she wrote, “This is my beautiful Mama Mary.
She passed away just a week ago. She was pure joy. She loved her family, and she loved NFL football, especially the Broncos.” Her words were a testament to the powerful connection she shared with her mother, who had been a constant source of support and love.
During the game, Beisner-Buck interviewed Rachaad White, whose own mother had played a major role in his life. As White shared the advice his mother had given him—”Be where your feet are”—Beisner-Buck reflected on those words.
She realized she was doing just that, standing on the field, holding back tears but staying strong. She believed her mom was with her in spirit, “right on her feet now,” free of pain, and watching over her from wherever she was.
Though the cause of her mother’s death remains private, Beisner-Buck’s bravery in returning to work shows her strength and dedication. She honored her mother’s memory not only by sharing her story but also by pushing through her own heartache to continue doing the work her mother so deeply appreciated.
