The NFL is under fire for fining San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa $11,255 after he wore a “Make America Great Again” hat during a postgame interview with teammate Brock Purdy. Bosa’s action followed the 49ers’ October 27 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. The fine has reignited debates about the league’s approach to political speech and accusations of hypocrisy.

A History of Uneven Enforcement

This isn’t the first time the NFL has punished political expression. In 2022, Washington Commanders Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio was fined $100,000 for referring to the January 6 Capitol riot as a “dustup.” Critics argue the hefty fine stifled free speech, raising questions about whether league employees are penalized for holding politically inconvenient views.

The NFL’s actions against Bosa stand in sharp contrast to its treatment of former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who knelt during the National Anthem in 2016 to protest police shootings of Black men. Kaepernick faced no fines for his protest, even though it sparked national controversy and led to accusations of divisiveness.

Fans and Critics Respond

Fans and commentators have highlighted the inconsistency. Some see hypocrisy in the NFL fining Bosa for his MAGA hat while promoting messages like “Black Lives Matter” and “End Racism” on players’ helmets and in end-zone graphics. Others claim the difference lies in timing: Kaepernick’s protest interrupted a unifying moment during the National Anthem, whereas Bosa’s statement came after the game.

“The National Anthem is a moment to bring people together as Americans, regardless of politics,” one fan noted. “Co-opting it for personal agendas, like Kaepernick did, feels wrong.”

A Political NFL?

The league’s willingness to embrace certain political messages adds to the murkiness. In 2020, NFL stadiums served as voting centers, and public service announcements encouraged fans to vote.
