Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis suffered a major blow Tuesday as the nation’s longest-running gang trial ended with the acquittal of two key defendants.
A Georgia jury cleared rapper Deamonte Kendrick, known as Yak Gotti, of all charges and found co-defendant Shannon Stillwell guilty of only one count: firearm possession by a convicted felon. Both men were accused of being part of the Young Slime Life (YSL) gang, linked to the Bloods.
A Historic Trial Ends in Drama
The trial, which began in 2022, spanned more than two years and included 28 defendants. The prosecution alleged YSL members committed murders, armed robberies, drug deals, and carjackings. Testimony from nearly 200 witnesses and ten months of jury selection made it Georgia’s longest criminal trial.
The case faced frequent disruptions. In July, the original judge recused himself after allegations of misconduct. Tensions flared between prosecutors and the defense, with Young Thug’s attorney Brian Steel briefly jailed for contempt before Georgia’s top court intervened.
Willis’ office relied on controversial evidence, including rap lyrics and social media posts, to link defendants to a criminal enterprise. But defense attorneys argued the case lacked substance.
“They tried to connect random crimes to see what stuck,” said Doug Weinstein, Kendrick’s lawyer. “But they failed to prove any organized gang activity.”
Rapper Acquitted, Co-Defendant Sentenced
Stillwell, previously accused of two murders and a drive-by shooting, received a ten-year sentence for the firearm charge. He’ll serve most of the time on probation, with two years already credited.
Kendrick, who was acquitted on all counts, maintained that his music, not crime, was his focus. Defense attorneys said prosecutors cherry-picked lyrics and online posts to paint the rapper as a gang member.
“This case was built on unreliable testimony and circumstantial evidence,” said Max Schardt, Stillwell’s attorney.
Both defendants endured violent attacks in jail during the trial. Stillwell was stabbed last year, and Kendrick was injured in an altercation on Sunday.
Young Thug’s Deal
Earlier this year, Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug, real name Jeffrey Williams, accepted a plea deal. He was sentenced to 40 years but had it commuted to time served with 15 years of probation. The deal shocked many, given allegations he was the gang’s ringleader.
“If he violates probation, he’ll face 20 years behind bars,” said Judge Paige Reese Whitaker.
Political Fallout
The YSL case has added pressure to Willis, already under fire for her handling of other high-profile cases, including the racketeering charges against President-elect Donald Trump. Critics point to her admitted affair with Nathan Wade, a prosecutor in Trump’s case, as a potential conflict of interest.
Trump, facing four criminal cases, saw two federal charges dropped, and his New York sentencing delayed indefinitely. Willis remains the last prosecutor actively pursuing charges against him.
Despite Tuesday’s verdict, Willis’ office remains defiant.
“We always respect a jury’s decision,” said DA spokesperson Jeff DiSantis. “This trial exposed violent gang activity that won’t go unchecked.”
But defense attorneys say the case unraveled under scrutiny.
“This trial was a waste of time and resources,” said Weinstein. “The jury saw through it.”
With the verdict, the YSL saga may finally be closing. But the political and legal ramifications for Willis are far from over.

I’ve not heard anything anywhere from anyone, to suggest that Fulton County, Georgia is not a terrible place to live. I wonder if the citizens of the county are aware what a crappy reputation their hometown has. Or if they care. Sounds like a good place to dump illegal aliens.
Incompetence is the name of game here. Some people are elevated to positions, because of race, sex or whatever the flavor of the month is.I sincerely hope that we learn from our mistakes and don’t continue on this path. It could be very costly and destructive.
