Illegal Migrant Who Set Woman on Fire in Subway Identified

Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a 33-year-old illegal migrant from Guatemala, has been identified as the suspect in the horrifying attack that left a woman burned to death on a Brooklyn subway train. Zapeta-Calil, who had previously been deported from the United States in 2018, reportedly re-entered the country illegally, according to federal immigration officials.

A Grisly Crime Shocks NYC

The incident occurred on December 22, 2024, aboard the F train in Brooklyn. Surveillance footage shows the suspect setting the woman on fire and then standing by as she was engulfed in flames. The victim, whose identity has not been released, suffered severe burns, complicating the ongoing autopsy process that will determine the charges against Zapeta-Calil.

Marie Ferguson, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), confirmed that Zapeta-Calil was apprehended at the Arizona border on June 1, 2018, and deported shortly after. “Despite being removed from the country, he illegally re-entered at an unknown time,” Ferguson said. ICE is now expected to issue a detainer to keep him in custody as the investigation unfolds.

NYPD Arrests Suspect

The NYPD apprehended Zapeta-Calil following the attack, which has sparked outrage across the city. Video footage captured the horrific moment, showing the suspect watching the victim burn in the subway car. Police sources described the crime scene as one of the most disturbing in recent memory.

Awaiting Autopsy Results

The autopsy results are critical in determining the exact charges Zapeta-Calil will face. Due to the extent of the victim’s injuries, forensic analysis is taking longer than usual. However, sources close to the investigation have indicated that charges could range from murder to arson, depending on the findings.

Community Outrage and Policy Questions

The brutal nature of the attack has reignited debates about border security and the handling of repeat illegal entries. Critics of current immigration policies argue that Zapeta-Calil’s case highlights systemic failures.

“This is a tragedy that should never have happened,” said a spokesperson for a local advocacy group. “We need stricter enforcement to ensure that individuals who are deported cannot return to harm others.”

Calls for Justice

The attack has sent shockwaves through New York City, with residents demanding swift justice. “This could have been any of us,” said a commuter interviewed near the crime scene. “The subway is supposed to be a safe place, not a death trap.”

As the investigation continues, the city waits for answers and hopes for accountability in a case that has left New Yorkers shaken and angry.
