Kate Middleton Opens Up About ‘Long-Term Side Effects’ of Cancer Treatment

Princess Catherine of Wales, known affectionately as Kate Middleton, made a poignant return to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London on Tuesday.

The visit marked her first significant solo engagement in over a year, during which she shared candid insights about her private battle with cancer. Clad in a checkered brown coat over a burgundy maxi dress, the 43-year-old mother of three greeted staff, patients, and families with warmth and gratitude.

“Coming in the front entrance here, having made so many quiet, private visits, it’s actually quite nice,” the princess remarked upon arrival. Her connection with the Royal Marsden is deeply personal; the hospital staff played a crucial role in her treatment last year.

Chief Executive Dame Cally Palmer expressed the hospital’s honor in hosting the princess, stating, “Her Royal Highness’ presence is inspiring for both staff and patients. It’s a testament to the outstanding work our teams deliver every day.”

Kate revealed the challenges of life after cancer treatment, describing lingering side effects that many patients face. “You think the treatment has finished, and you can crack on and get back to normal, but that’s still a real challenge,” she explained. “The words totally disappear. It’s important to understand there are long-term side effects beyond the treatment itself.”

She shared her thoughts on resilience, adding, “Everyone said to me, ‘Please keep a positive mindset; it makes such a difference.’ And they were right.”

While the public learned of her cancer diagnosis in March 2024, details about her treatment were kept private until now. A Kensington Palace spokesperson highlighted her determination to bring attention to the hospital’s world-class care. “The princess wanted to show her gratitude to the incredible team and shine a light on the life-saving work at the Marsden,” they stated.

Kate’s journey began in January 2024, with a planned abdominal surgery at the London Clinic. Her subsequent care at the Royal Marsden became central to her recovery. However, her journey was not without challenges; an alleged breach of her medical records prompted an official investigation.

During her visit, it was announced that the princess has been appointed as a royal patron of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, joining her husband, Prince William. The title carries deep significance, as it once belonged to William’s late mother, Princess Diana, who was a passionate advocate for cancer patients.

“We are incredibly fortunate to receive royal patronage,” Dame Palmer noted. “It allows us to highlight the importance of innovation and compassion in cancer care.”

As she continues her recovery, Kate’s royal duties remain scaled back. Sources close to the family shared that she is focusing on her health and family life. “She simply won’t be going back to work in the same way as before,” an insider told the Daily Mail.

Her lightened schedule reflects her priorities. While full-scale foreign tours remain off the calendar for now, her gradual return to public life signals resilience and determination.

Kate’s visit to the Royal Marsden wasn’t just about gratitude—it was about hope. Sitting with patients undergoing chemotherapy, she asked thoughtful questions and offered words of encouragement. One patient, Rebecca Mendelson, shared, “Her kindness and understanding mean so much. It’s clear she’s been through this herself.”

As she petted Scout, the hospital’s therapy dog, and embraced staff who had become like family, Kate’s message was clear: cancer doesn’t define a person. Her courage and openness serve as a reminder that recovery is both a personal and collective journey—one that thrives on empathy, support, and determination.
