Newborn Found Abandoned with Umbilical Cord in Freezing Temperatures

A newborn baby, found with the umbilical cord still attached, remains in critical condition after being abandoned outside in freezing temperatures in San Antonio early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 3 a.m. on January 21, 2025, the infant was discovered on a street corner across from a fire station. The baby was swaddled in a towel and placed inside a basket. The location, right near the intersection of Nolan and Cherry Street, is just steps away from a designated safe surrender site, where parents in distress can legally leave a newborn without fear of prosecution.

The temperature that night dropped as low as 25°F, according to the National Weather Service, amid an unusually cold spell gripping the region. Experts have raised concerns over the immediate danger to the baby, who was found struggling to breathe.

Texas is known for its Baby Moses Law (also called the Safe Haven Law), which allows parents who are unable to care for their newborns to legally leave them in designated safe spaces, including hospitals, fire stations, and emergency medical centers. Yet, in this case, the infant was not placed in the safe surrender space just yards away. Instead, the baby was left outside in the cold, raising questions about why the parent didn’t use the available, no-questions-asked service.
