America’s Next Frontier?
Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), a staunch supporter of President Trump, has introduced a groundbreaking bill that would authorize the administration to acquire Greenland and officially rename it Red, White, and Blueland.
“This is about national security, economic opportunity, and American greatness,” Carter, 67, said in a statement. “President Trump has the vision to make this happen, and Congress must act to give him the tools to negotiate this historic deal.”
The Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025 would direct the Department of the Interior to oversee the transition and ensure all federal documents reflect the new name within six months.
A Longtime Goal for Trump
President Trump, 78, has long considered Greenland a strategic asset. The massive Arctic territory—technically owned by Denmark but largely self-governed—has been on Trump’s radar since his first term in office.
After winning re-election in 2024, Trump revived discussions on the potential purchase, citing national security concerns and increasing Arctic competition from China and Russia. He has also hinted that military options are not entirely off the table.
“We’re spending all this money defending Greenland anyway. Why not bring it into the fold?” Trump reportedly told aides, according to sources familiar with the discussions. “The people there love us. We’ll take great care of them.”
Why Greenland?
Though its name suggests otherwise, Greenland is largely covered in ice and has remained a remote and sparsely populated region. With a population of just 57,000, mostly Indigenous Inuit and Danish settlers, the territory has long relied on Denmark for economic support.
But Greenland’s strategic value extends beyond its barren tundra. The U.S. has maintained a military presence there for decades, including Thule Air Base, a critical site for missile defense and Arctic surveillance.
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) has echoed Trump’s concerns. “Denmark isn’t doing what needs to be done,” he told Fox News. “The Arctic is the next great battleground. If we don’t take control, the Chinese will.”
GOP Leaders Back the Plan
Several Republican leaders have thrown their weight behind Carter’s bill, emphasizing both economic and security benefits.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointed to a 1951 treaty that obligates the U.S. to defend Greenland. “We already have a stake in Greenland’s security,” he said during an interview on ‘The Megyn Kelly Show.’ “It makes perfect sense to make this an official part of the United States.”
Vice President JD Vance criticized Denmark for failing to leverage Greenland’s economic potential. “It’s a crucial waterway for global trade,” Vance said on Fox News. “Denmark has had its chance. It’s time for America to lead.”
Trump Jr. on the Ground
Before taking office for his second term, Trump sent his son Donald Trump Jr. on a goodwill tour of Greenland, where he met with local leaders and shared videos of residents sporting MAGA hats.
“It’s clear the people of Greenland respect strong leadership,” Trump Jr. said in a social media post. “They know America is their best bet for a prosperous future.”
What’s Next?
Denmark has repeatedly dismissed the idea of selling Greenland, calling it “not for sale.” However, some geopolitical analysts believe that economic incentives or security guarantees could make the deal more attractive.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration isn’t stopping at Greenland. Sources close to the White House indicate that the president has also inquired about potential U.S. interests in the Panama Canal, Canada’s northern territories, and even the war-torn Gaza Strip.
For now, all eyes are on Congress as Carter’s bill makes its way through the House. With a Republican majority, Trump’s vision of expanding America’s borders may be closer than ever.
