Ilhan Omar Faces ‘Removal’ After Comments on Charlie Kirk Assassination

“No one who excuses political murder should sit on a congressional committee,” says Rep. Buddy Carter as backlash against Omar intensifies.

The political fallout from the shocking assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk is far from over — and now one of the most controversial members of Congress could lose her powerful committee seats.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is facing a formal resolution introduced Monday by Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., demanding her immediate removal from two key House committees. The move comes after Omar made inflammatory remarks in the wake of Kirk’s death, which many on the right say dishonor his memory and excuse political violence.

Carter, a staunch Trump ally and current U.S. Senate candidate, isn’t mincing words.

“Disparaging Charlie Kirk’s legacy, a God-fearing, honorable man, for boldly sharing his conservative beliefs is disgusting,” Carter told reporters. “The radical left has normalized meeting free speech with violence, and it must stop.”

Resolution to Remove Omar from Education and Budget Committees

Omar currently serves on the House Budget Committee and is the ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections under the House Education and Workforce Committee. Carter’s resolution seeks to remove her from both.

“Committees are for serious lawmakers, not hate-spewing politicians,” Carter added. “No one who justifies the assassination of someone with different political views than them deserves to sit on a committee.”

The Georgia Republican’s resolution has already begun gaining support among House conservatives, especially following a string of Omar’s statements that many believe crossed the line.

The Comments That Sparked Outrage

Days after Kirk was fatally shot in the neck during a Q&A event on his “American Comeback Tour” in Orem, Utah, Omar gave an interview to left-wing outlet Zeteo in which she said:

“There is nothing more effed up… than to completely pretend that his words and actions have not been recorded and in existence for the last decade.”

Omar went on to claim Kirk “downplayed slavery” and dismissed Juneteenth as a fabricated holiday.

While she later posted a message on X expressing “empathy” for Kirk’s wife and children, Republicans say the damage was already done.

In her social media post, Omar wrote:

“While I disagreed with Charlie Kirk vehemently about his rhetoric, my heart breaks for his wife and children… Right-wing accounts trying to spin a false story when I condemned his murder multiple times is fitting for their agenda…”

But GOP leaders aren’t buying it.

Conservatives Call It “Too Little, Too Late”

“Ilhan Omar used the death of an American patriot as a platform to launch political attacks and rewrite the narrative,” said Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill. “It’s sickening. She didn’t mourn. She justified. She needs to go.”

Omar’s critics point to a long history of divisive comments and anti-American rhetoric. A founding member of the so-called “Squad,” Omar has previously come under fire for comparing U.S. military operations to terrorist attacks and suggesting political opponents are motivated by bigotry.

“She doesn’t get a pass just because she issues a cleaned-up statement days later,” said former Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon on his War Room podcast. “This is who she is — and it’s time for Republicans to stop tolerating it.”

Security Questions Swirl Around Kirk’s Killing

Kirk’s assassination shocked the nation and raised immediate concerns over political violence and the lack of security at college campuses hosting conservative speakers. The Trump administration has launched a full investigation into the event, and several arrests have already been made.

According to the Secret Service, threats against political figures — especially right-leaning activists — have spiked in 2025 following President Trump’s reelection in a historic landslide victory.

Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, had become a prominent face of the conservative youth movement. He had just launched a new voter outreach initiative aimed at college campuses days before his death.

Kirk’s widow, Erika, spoke briefly at a private memorial in Scottsdale, Arizona, last week.

“Charlie loved this country,” she said tearfully. “He loved God. And he believed in the power of free speech — even when it made people uncomfortable.”

What Happens Next?

The House GOP is expected to hold a vote on Carter’s resolution as early as next week. Speaker Jim Jordan’s office has not yet commented publicly, but insiders suggest leadership is open to disciplinary action against Omar.

Republicans are also using the moment to renew their push for a broader investigation into far-left rhetoric and its link to recent acts of political violence.

“It’s not just about Ilhan Omar,” said Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla. “It’s about sending a message: If you endorse violence or demonize your opponents, there are consequences.”

Omar’s office has not responded to multiple requests for comment.
