A devastating bus crash in Guatemala has left at least 55 people dead, with many others seriously injured. The accident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning just outside Guatemala City, when a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged over 100 feet into a polluted ravine.
According to local authorities, a multi-vehicle collision led to the bus losing control and careening off a bridge into the steep gorge. Rescuers spent hours pulling bodies from the wreckage, while survivors were rushed to area hospitals. Officials confirmed that two of the injured later succumbed to their wounds at San Juan de Dios Hospital.
Witnesses described the horrifying scene. “I heard a loud crash and then screams,” said Marco López, a shopkeeper near the crash site. “People were trying to get out, but the bus was upside down in the water.”
The bus had departed from Progreso, a town northeast of the capital, and was carrying a mix of workers, families, and students. Among the dead were several children, according to emergency responders. Volunteer firefighter Óscar Sánchez, who was among the first on the scene, described it as one of the worst disasters he had ever witnessed. “Bodies were everywhere. It was heartbreaking,” he said.
This tragedy highlights Guatemala’s ongoing infrastructure and road safety crisis. The country’s mountainous roads, combined with outdated vehicles and lack of proper safety measures, make fatal crashes alarmingly common. According to Guatemala’s National Civil Police, traffic accidents kill over 1,500 people annually, many due to poor road conditions and reckless driving.
Guatemala’s leftist President Bernardo Arévalo offered his condolences and declared a national day of mourning, though many citizens expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address long-standing transportation safety issues. Critics argue that corruption and lack of enforcement have allowed unsafe buses to remain in operation. “How many more innocent people have to die before something changes?” asked local activist María Gutierrez.
For now, grieving families are left to mourn their lost loved ones as authorities continue to investigate the crash. Funeral services are already being arranged across the country, as Guatemala once again grapples with the cost of its failing infrastructure.
