NBC Washington viewers got an unexpected surprise when longtime reporter and anchor Joseph Olmo suddenly revealed live on the air that he is walking away from local television news.
“Well, before we go tonight, I’ve got just one more story for you,” Olmo told viewers before dropping the personal bombshell.
“After almost 10 years in broadcasting, tomorrow night I will hit the streets of the DMV one final time as a local news reporter.”
Olmo has spent roughly seven years covering the Washington, D.C., region for NBC4 and Telemundo 44, reporting from the heart of a media market dominated by politics, government and some of the biggest national stories in the country.
But the Annapolis native made clear that despite working in the shadow of the White House and Capitol Hill, it was local reporting that meant the most to him.
“You can cover the world, but nothing compares to being a local news reporter,” Olmo said. “Because think about it. Who else would tell you about all the things happening where we live?”
“To watch all these moments in person and then share what I see with you has been so cool,” he added.
Olmo, a graduate of the Catholic University of America and a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, hinted that his sudden departure isn’t because he’s giving up on ambition.
Instead, he suggested he is ready to chase another dream.
“In life, you are often encouraged to dream big. But what happens when you have several dreams?” he asked viewers. “I firmly believe our time here is way too short to get to the end and wonder what if I had tried that?”
That cryptic comment immediately sparked speculation over where Olmo could be headed next.
The anchor offered another tantalizing clue on Instagram, telling followers that he would be “staying right here at home.”
“And if you know anything about me, then the next chapter won’t be much of a surprise 😉,” he wrote.
One theory apparently circulating among viewers was that Olmo planned to become a pilot, but he reportedly shot that idea down.
His LinkedIn page, meanwhile, still listed NBC as his employer following the announcement.
Olmo also used his emotional farewell to shine a light on the enormous number of people working behind the scenes at a local television station — a part of the media business viewers rarely see.
“Whenever you watch us on TV or online, remember one means many,” he said. “You may see one person on at a time, but there are hundreds of people who get us here.”
He then thanked his NBC4 colleagues and the viewers who followed his reporting over the years.
“And to my entire NBC 4 family, I say thank you for letting me be part of this accomplished team,” Olmo said. “And to everybody who watches us, thank you.”
Fans quickly flooded social media with messages expressing disappointment over the surprise exit.
“You have been such a good addition to the NBC4 team, Joseph! You will be missed,” one viewer wrote.
Another pleaded: “Oh, no. Please don’t go, Joseph! You’re one of the coolest journalists on TV now.”
Olmo began his television career working as a freelancer for local and Hispanic news outlets before joining WDVM-TV in Hagerstown, Maryland, in 2020.
Now, after nearly a decade in broadcasting and years covering the nation’s capital region, Olmo appears ready to trade the daily grind of local news for an entirely new chapter.
He just isn’t telling viewers exactly what that chapter is — yet.
