Less than a week after a crushing Super Bowl defeat, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is facing an even greater loss—his grandfather, Randy Martin, has passed away.
The news was shared by Mahomes’ mother, Randi Mahomes, who took to Instagram on Friday to express her grief.
“Hard to find the words of holding my father’s hand as he goes to Heaven,” she wrote. “I know he’s in a better place. I love you, Daddy. Well done, good and faithful servant!”
Martin’s health had been declining for months. Back in September, Randi Mahomes posted on social media that her father had been hospitalized and asked for prayers.
“He is in the hospital and is not well,” she shared at the time.
By late January, the family received difficult news. Martin had entered hospice care, signaling that time was running out.
“My dad is in hospice, and I’m lost for words,” Randi wrote on Jan. 24.
Despite his failing health, Martin had one wish—to see his grandson take the field in Super Bowl LIX. “He’s hanging on,” Randi shared before the game, “just hoping to watch Patrick play one more time.”
Mahomes, already considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of his generation, had aimed to secure a historic three-peat for the Chiefs. Instead, the Philadelphia Eagles delivered a stunning blow, dominating Kansas City in what some analysts are calling one of the worst performances of Mahomes’ career.
After the loss, Mahomes took responsibility, addressing Chiefs fans directly.
“Appreciate all the love and support from #ChiefsKingdom. I let y’all down (Sunday),” he posted on social media. “I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity He has given me. We will be back.”
Now, Mahomes must process both professional disappointment and personal loss. Those close to the star quarterback say his faith and family have always been his foundation.
“I know that it has meant a lot to him,” Randi said before the Super Bowl. “He must be such a proud grandpa, so proud.”
As Mahomes grieves, Chiefs fans and football lovers alike are rallying around him, offering prayers and support for a man who has given them so many thrilling moments on the field.
