Shocking Text Messages from Night of Idaho Student Murders Released

A chilling new development has emerged in the case of Bryan Kohberger, the former criminology Ph.D. student accused of brutally murdering four University of Idaho students in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022.

Court filings, unsealed for the first time, disclose text messages exchanged between the two surviving roommates in the minutes following the attacks—providing insight into the terror and confusion of that fateful night.

Newly Uncovered Texts: The First Signs of Alarm

According to court records, roommates identified as DM and BF exchanged frantic text messages between 4:22 AM and 4:24 AM—just minutes after authorities believe the killer fled the scene. These texts, which prosecutors are pushing to introduce as evidence, reveal their growing unease.

DM, who had previously told investigators she saw a masked intruder with “bushy eyebrows,” attempted to call multiple victims before sending BF a troubling message:

“No one is answering. I’m rlly confused rn.”

As the minutes passed, DM sent another message, this time to one of the victims, Kaylee Goncalves:

“Kaylee… What’s going on?”

According to the filing, DM also attempted to describe the figure she had seen leaving the house:

“Like he had something over [his] forehead and [his] mouth… like a ski mask almost.”

A Night of Horror, A Morning of Silence

For hours, DM and BF reportedly remained inside the house, unsure of what had happened. Prosecutors say DM continued to send unanswered texts to her slain housemates, including one at 10:23 AM that read:

“Pls answer. R u up??”

At 11:40 AM, DM placed a call to her father. Less than 30 minutes later, at approximately noon, a 911 call was made from BF’s phone, alerting police to an unresponsive individual inside the home. That call would ultimately lead to the grim discovery of the four victims: Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20.

Case Developments: DNA Evidence and Courtroom Battles

Prosecutors argue that crucial forensic evidence ties Kohberger directly to the crime. A Ka-Bar knife sheath, discovered under Mogen’s body, reportedly contained DNA evidence that linked investigators to the suspect. Kohberger, who was pursuing a doctorate in criminology at Washington State University at the time of the murders, has maintained his innocence.

Additionally, court filings reveal a recently unsealed transcript of the 911 call, in which multiple individuals attempted to explain the horrifying scene to dispatchers. One caller reportedly mentioned an intruder being seen the night before, adding a chilling layer to the unfolding case.

The Timeline of a Nightmare

  • 4:00 AM: Suspect arrives at the house
  • 4:00 – 4:17 AM: Murders take place
  • 4:19 AM: Roommate calls victims; no response
  • 4:22 – 4:24 AM: Roommates text each other in distress
  • 4:27 AM: Further unanswered calls to victims
  • 4:32 AM: DM texts Goncalves: “Pls answer”
  • 10:23 AM: Another unanswered message to victims
  • 11:39 AM: DM calls her father
  • 12:00 PM: 911 call placed from BF’s phone

What’s Next?

As the case moves toward trial, the prosecution is fighting to introduce the newly unsealed text messages as part of their evidence, arguing they provide crucial context regarding the immediate aftermath of the attack. Meanwhile, Kohberger’s defense team is pushing to suppress key forensic evidence, including the controversial DNA findings on the knife sheath.

With public interest in the case at an all-time high, this trial is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched legal battles in recent memory. The chilling details emerging from the unsealed court filings underscore the horror of that November night and the lasting trauma it left on the small college town of Moscow, Idaho.
