Plane Crash Kills Beloved Musician and 11 Others

A tragic plane crash off the coast of Honduras has claimed at least 12 lives, including renowned musician and former politician Aurelio Martinez. The accident happened late Monday night near the island of Roatán, a popular Caribbean getaway.

Authorities say the British-made Jetstream 41 suffered an apparent mechanical failure just minutes after takeoff, veering sharply before plunging into the sea—only half a mile from shore.

Musician, Congressman, and Cultural Pioneer

Martinez, 55, wasn’t just a beloved musician. He was a national trailblazer, making history as Honduras’ first Black congressman from 2006 to 2010. Known for his powerful Garifuna music—a blend of African, Caribbean, and Latin rhythms—he spent years bringing global attention to the culture of his people, descendants of shipwrecked African slaves.

His death has left Honduras in mourning.

“He was a legend. A voice for our people, a fighter for our rights,” said Honduran cultural historian Elena López. “This is a devastating loss.”

Witnesses Describe Terrifying Crash

The plane, operated by Aerolinea Lanhsa, was carrying 15 passengers, two pilots, and a flight attendant en route to La Ceiba on the mainland.

“I was fishing when it happened,” one local fisherman told HCH television. “The plane came out of nowhere, banking hard before it hit the water. It almost crashed into our boat.”

Dramatic Rescue Efforts

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, pulling five survivors from the wreckage. A shocking video released by the Honduran National Police shows rescuers carrying an injured passenger on a stretcher over jagged rocks.

Authorities say one body remains missing, and recovery efforts are ongoing.

Government Responds

Honduran President Xiomara Castro de Zelaya called for immediate action, ordering the Red Cross and emergency teams to the site.

“May God protect the lives of those involved,” she posted on social media.

Aviation officials are now investigating what caused the apparent mechanical failure. Some reports suggest maintenance issues may have played a role, raising concerns about airline safety in the region.

A Nation in Mourning

Martinez’s death is being felt beyond Honduras. Fans across Latin America and the U.S. are remembering him not only for his music but also for his impact on politics and human rights.

“This man gave everything to his country. He was a true patriot,” said Honduran-American activist Jorge Castillo. “A voice like his doesn’t come around often.”

As Honduras searches for answers, one thing is clear—Aurelio Martinez’s legacy will live on.
