Corey Feldman isn’t holding back. On a recent episode of Billy Corgan’s Magnificent Others podcast, the former child star dropped a stunning claim: Johnny Depp personally sabotaged Feldman’s shot at a major Hollywood comeback by whispering poison into the ears of producers during the casting of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
“I was cast before DiCaprio,” Feldman said. “That role was mine.”
The year was 1993. Feldman, fresh out of rehab, says he had cleaned up his life and was finally back on track after years of battling addiction. But just as things were looking up, he says Johnny Depp – the film’s lead – stepped in and shut the door on his comeback.
“Depp told the producers I was a junkie,” Feldman alleged. “He said he wouldn’t work with me.”
The part Feldman is talking about? The one that catapulted Leonardo DiCaprio to fame – a role that earned him his first Academy Award nomination at just 19 years old.
According to Feldman, he never even watched the film.
“I’m still bitter,” he admitted. “It was a bitter leaf.”
A deeper Hollywood history
Feldman, now 53, isn’t just known for The Goonies and Stand By Me. He was one of the biggest child stars of the ’80s. But behind the scenes, he says the industry was a minefield of exploitation and substance abuse. He’s been vocal for years about rampant sexual abuse in Hollywood, and now he’s adding professional sabotage to the list of wrongs.
“This is the first time I’m telling this story,” he said. “So I’m sure I’m gonna get hung for it.”
Fox News Digital reached out to reps for Depp and Feldman. No official comment yet.
An old rivalry with DiCaprio?
The Gilbert Grape loss wasn’t the end of Feldman’s DiCaprio deja vu. He also claims he was up for the lead role in Titanic — another career-making part that went to DiCaprio.
“That one didn’t sting as much,” Feldman said. “But yeah, I read for it. I know I was in the running.”
The Phoenix connection
Feldman also revealed he was close to River Phoenix at the time — another young star who tragically died of a drug overdose in 1993, the same year Gilbert Grape hit theaters. Feldman claims he was trying to help Phoenix stay clean — while Phoenix was spending time with Depp.
“I was sober,” he insisted. “I had just gotten out of rehab. I was trying to help River. And then I get stabbed in the back.”
A career shaped by ‘what ifs’
From starring in a McDonald’s ad at age 3 to headlining blockbusters before his 18th birthday, Feldman’s early rise was meteoric. But his adult career has been a rollercoaster of addiction, comebacks, and revelations. He’s since released music and become an outspoken critic of Hollywood’s dark side.
“You don’t hang on those moments forever,” Feldman said. “But that one… it left a scar.”
As Hollywood continues its so-called “reckoning,” Feldman’s voice is once again cutting through the noise. And if his claims are true, one of America’s most famous actors may have some explaining to do.
