One of New Jersey’s top Democrats has been exposed in a resurfaced video cheering on a known antisemite who praised Hitler, called for violence against White people, and smeared America’s civil rights legacy.
Ras Baraka, the progressive mayor of Newark and a leading contender in the state’s upcoming governor’s race, was caught on camera introducing and applauding Louis Farrakhan—leader of the Nation of Islam and one of the most infamous hate preachers in America.
In the footage, taken at a Newark church in 2004, Baraka introduced Farrakhan as “the leader of every Black person,” and praised him as having unmatched “moral authority.”
But moments later, Farrakhan launched into a hateful tirade that included calls for violence:
“We didn’t believe in no non-violence,” he shouted. “The cracker hit you on your jaw, you break his neck!”
Baraka applauded.
Farrakhan Called White People “The Real Devil” While Baraka Nodded Along
Farrakhan, now 91, has long been monitored by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center, both of which classify his organization as a hate group. He’s praised Hitler, vilified Jews, and slandered White Americans.
In the video, he goes further:
“These demons will even kill a policeman and then blame it on you… You’re not dealing with righteous people. This cracker is the real devil.”
Again, Baraka stood and applauded.
Not Just a One-Time Thing
Baraka’s association with Farrakhan wasn’t a youthful mistake. It was a pattern.
In 2012, while serving as principal of Central High School in Newark, Baraka invited Farrakhan to speak to over 1,000 students. Then, in 2017, as mayor, he hosted another speech titled “Separation or Death,” where Farrakhan called on Black Americans to demand reparations and split from the United States.
And in 2018, Farrakhan returned to Newark to explicitly support Baraka’s political rise:
“I came here tonight to stand for my brother,” he said.
Baraka Refuses to Back Down
Now that the video has resurfaced, Baraka is doubling down.
“I will not be bullied or silenced,” he told Jewish Insider. “These latest accusations… are a reflection of the fear my candidacy is provoking in the political establishment.”
Baraka also defended the Nation of Islam’s legacy in inner cities:
“They’ve worked to reduce violence and support self-determination in neighborhoods that have been ignored.”
National Outcry Grows
Chuck Schumer, the Senate’s top Democrat, recently warned of growing antisemitism—especially on the left—during a The View appearance promoting his book “Antisemitism in America: A Warning.”
Yet within his own party, figures like Baraka are embracing the exact hate Schumer says threatens Jewish communities.
Jewish groups have condemned similar ties to Farrakhan before. Activists recently slammed Rep. Ilhan Omar and other far-left Democrats for defending a mural of Farrakhan, calling it “appalling.”
“Reimagine New Jersey”—With Farrakhan’s Blessing?
Despite the backlash, Baraka continues to run on a progressive platform that calls to “reimagine New Jersey” and “deconstruct the state budget.”
He wants to make “equity our north star,” but critics say it’s clear which direction he’s really heading.
“This is a man who stood and cheered while someone praised Hitler and called for cracking skulls,” said political strategist Mike Cernovich. “If this is the future of the Democratic Party, voters need to wake up—and fast.”
Baraka’s campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
