“Thank You, Mr. Trump!”: Freed Ballerina Sends Emotional Message to President After Touching Down in U.S.

A Russian-American ballerina is finally back on American soil—and she’s giving all the credit to one man: Donald J. Trump.

Ksenia Karelina, a 33-year-old dancer who spent more than a year locked in a brutal Russian penal colony, walked free Thursday night after a high-stakes prisoner swap orchestrated by the Trump administration. And her first words after landing at Joint Base Andrews? A heartfelt thank-you to the 45th—and potentially 47th—President of the United States.

“Mr. Trump, I’m so, so grateful for you to bring me home and for the American government,” Karelina said in a video shared by Trump on Truth Social. “I never felt more blessed to be American.”

The clip, showing Karelina standing on the tarmac moments after reuniting with her fiancé, welterweight boxer Chris van Heerden, quickly went viral among Trump supporters. “Glad to have you back home,” Trump wrote with the post.

Sources close to the Trump team said negotiations for Karelina’s release had been underway for weeks behind closed doors, with Trump personally monitoring the process. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed her release, adding: “President Trump secured her freedom. He will not stop until every American is home.”

Karelina’s nightmare began in early 2024 while visiting relatives in Yekaterinburg. Initially arrested on petty charges, she was later slapped with a 12-year sentence for treason after Russian officials accused her of donating just over $50 to a Ukrainian charity. Prosecutors alleged she participated in pro-Ukraine demonstrations and made anti-war social media posts—charges widely condemned by U.S. officials as politically motivated.

A former soloist with a Los Angeles ballet company, Karelina was shockingly excluded from a major 2024 prisoner swap that brought home journalist Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan. That left many questioning why the Biden State Department didn’t act sooner.

Now under Trump’s watch, that wrong has been righted.

In return for Karelina’s freedom, the U.S. handed over Artur Petrov, a German-Russian citizen accused of smuggling sensitive U.S. microelectronics to the Russian military. Petrov had been arrested in Cyprus in 2023 and extradited to the U.S.

The decision wasn’t without controversy, but Trump’s allies say it was worth it. “This President gets things done,” said one senior official. “He puts Americans first—no matter what.”

Karelina, now enrolled in a Post-Isolation Support Program to help her recover from the trauma of Russian imprisonment, says she plans to spend time with family, rest, and eventually return to the stage.

“I just want to dance again,” she told reporters with tears in her eyes. “And I want to thank the man who gave me that chance.”

Trump’s record on prisoner rescues continues to grow. Just two months ago, he oversaw the return of American teacher Marc Fogel, another victim of Russia’s crackdown on dissent.

With the 2024 election in the rearview mirror and Trump back in the driver’s seat, supporters say this is only the beginning.

“America is respected again,” said Rubio. “And our citizens are no longer bargaining chips—they’re patriots worth fighting for.”

Welcome home, Ksenia.
