Panic gripped the skies over Central America Thursday after a knife-wielding man reportedly hijacked a Tropic Air passenger plane mid-flight, forcing airport officials to shut down operations and ground all flights.
The terrifying ordeal began shortly after takeoff from Belize City, when an unidentified man allegedly brandished a knife and took control of the aircraft, according to local media and airport personnel.
“All flights are grounded. Staff are freaking out,” said an airport source, speaking under condition of anonymity. “We’ve never seen anything like this.”
Early reports suggest the small regional aircraft began circling erratically in the airspace over Belize, as terrified passengers watched the nightmare unfold. A bystander at the airport described seeing a person “covered in blood” shortly after the incident began, fueling fears that someone may have been injured — or worse.
The aircraft, operated by Tropic Air, typically services local destinations and caters to tourists and regional travelers. But on this day, a routine flight turned into a scene straight out of a hostage thriller.
Law enforcement scrambled to respond, but so far, few official details have been released. The identity of the suspect, his motives, and the current status of the passengers and crew remain unclear.
Security experts are already raising alarm bells about regional airport vulnerabilities. “This is a serious breach. It highlights how easy it still is for bad actors to bypass security in smaller airports,” said former TSA agent Mark Rutherford. “Knife or not, any hijacking is a threat to national and international aviation.”
For many Americans, especially those who remember the post-9/11 crackdowns and promises of safer skies, this shocking incident will likely reignite calls for tighter border and airport controls across the hemisphere.
Tropic Air has yet to issue a statement, and local authorities have not confirmed whether the plane has landed safely.
