Massive Boeing 777 Comes Within Feet of Disaster at Texas Airport (Video)

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a heart-stopping incident at a private Texas airport after a massive Boeing 777 cargo plane flew so dangerously low that one of its wings appeared to come within feet of striking the ground.

The terrifying moment happened Wednesday, June 24, at Horseshoe Bay Resort Airport, where the cargo aircraft was taking part in a test flight, according to the FAA.

Video of the incident quickly spread online, showing the giant jet screaming low over the runway with its right wing alarmingly close to the pavement. FlightRadar24 data reportedly showed the plane was within just 25 feet of the ground.

Air traffic control audio from LiveATC.net captured the pilot telling a controller the crew would be performing a “low approach” before the dramatic pass.

The aircraft had recently been converted from a passenger jet into a freighter by a private company and was undergoing testing before delivery.

ABC News aviation analyst Steve Ganyard said the maneuver appeared to resemble “flat hatting,” a term used to describe showing off in an aircraft in a way that can be dangerous.

Ganyard said the stunt appeared to put the airplane and crew at risk, raising serious questions about why the enormous jet was flown so close to the ground.

Although the plane was painted in Qatar Airways colors, the airline was not operating the aircraft at the time, and Qatar Airways pilots were not flying it. The plane is registered to Jetran LLC, which said the Boeing 777 was undergoing a final pre-delivery test before it was expected to join Qatar Airways’ cargo fleet.

Jetran LLC said it was aware of the viral video showing the freighter performing what it described as “a low-pass flight in a manner that does not reflect operational standards.”

“We expect the relevant parties and authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly and take appropriate action,” the company said in a statement.

No injuries were reported, but the close call has sparked alarm among aviation watchers, with many questioning how a test flight at a private airport turned into such a jaw-dropping near-miss.

The FAA’s investigation remains ongoing.
