A deadly weekend down under has left six people dead and one missing after monster waves—some triggered by Cyclone Tam—pounded Australia’s eastern coastline.
Among the victims was a fisherman who was swept off the rocks in New South Wales. Emergency crews pulled him from the water but were unable to save him, local police confirmed Sunday.
Since Friday, the powerful surf has claimed five lives in New South Wales and one in the state of Victoria, according to regional reports. Another person is still unaccounted for.
Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology had warned that dangerous swells would hammer the coast from Thursday to Saturday, with conditions expected to ease by Sunday. However, strong winds and risky surf are expected to continue in parts of New South Wales through Monday night.
Rescue efforts have been non-stop. Local police, marine patrol units, and volunteer organizations like Surf Life Saving NSW have been working around the clock to respond to emergencies and recover bodies.
According to authorities, over 150 rescues have taken place since Good Friday—including a 14-year-old boy who was hospitalized after being pulled from the water.
“This is shaping up to be the deadliest Easter weekend for drownings we’ve ever seen in New South Wales,” said Surf Life Saving NSW chief Steven Pearce. “With hot weather, huge crowds at the beach, and a massive swell, it was a recipe for disaster.”
Photos from the weekend show tourists and locals alike mesmerized—and sometimes terrified—as towering waves crashed against rocks at popular beaches like Bronte and Tamarama in Sydney.
Officials have issued repeated warnings to beachgoers: stay away from the rocks, check weather alerts, and don’t risk it if conditions look rough.
“Whether you’re swimming, boating, or fishing, these waters are dangerous right now,” police said in a statement. “Wear a lifejacket, bring safety gear, and if you’re unsure—don’t go.”
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed a drowning or near-drowning incident to come forward with information.
