Driver Slams into Crowded Festival, Killing At Least 11

A community celebration turned into a deadly nightmare Saturday night when a driver plowed into a packed Filipino street festival, killing 11 and leaving dozens wounded in the heart of Vancouver.

Authorities say a 30-year-old Vancouver man behind the wheel of a black Audi SUV barreled through the Lapu Lapu Day block party around 8 p.m., mowing down innocent families gathered for the event.

Police quickly arrested the suspect at the scene. Officials have ruled out terrorism but revealed the man has a long history of mental health issues — raising new concerns about public safety failures in a country critics say has prioritized “compassion” over control.

“This is the darkest day in Vancouver’s history,” Interim Police Chief Steve Rai declared grimly at a press conference.

Witnesses Describe a Scene of Horror

Business owner James Cruzat, who had been attending the festivities, told the Associated Press he heard a loud revving sound followed by a sickening bang.

“When we got there, we saw bodies. Some lifeless, others crying out,” Cruzat recalled, visibly shaken. “It’s something you only expect to see in movies. It’s heartbreaking and horrifying when it’s right in front of you.”

Disturbing images flooded social media showing a long stretch of Fraser Street littered with debris, crushed chairs, and motionless victims. Photos captured the black SUV wrecked and abandoned, its front end mangled.

Authorities Grapple With Aftermath

Vancouver’s Filipino community, a vibrant and growing part of Canada’s multicultural fabric, was devastated. Mayor Kenneth Sim offered his condolences but provided few answers.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident,” Sim said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “Our thoughts are with all those affected.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney called the attack “devastating” and extended sympathies to the Filipino Canadian community — though critics online blasted government leaders for what they call a “soft-on-crime” culture that allowed a repeat offender with known mental health issues to roam free.

A Country Under Pressure

The deadly attack comes at a time when concerns about public safety are surging across Canada. Violent crime, drug-related deaths, and mental health crises have all been on the rise, fueling public anger ahead of the country’s next election.

In Vancouver alone, random assaults have spiked nearly 35% over the past five years, according to law enforcement data. Saturday’s bloodbath is already being cited as another tragic example of government policies that critics say endanger ordinary citizens in the name of “tolerance.”

“Canada’s leaders have spent years ignoring the warning signs,” said a senior law enforcement source who asked not to be named. “Now innocent people are paying the price.”

Investigation Ongoing

The Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crime Section has taken the lead on the investigation. Authorities say they are interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence to determine whether the act was intentional.

Meanwhile, a grieving city remains in shock — and many Canadians are demanding real answers, not more empty platitudes.

“This is about accountability,” Cruzat said. “These people didn’t have to die.”

  1. If this had been a mass shooting you wouldn’t have said a word or would have defended the driver’s right to bear arms.k

  2. And Liberals want gun control. If somebody is intent on killing, ANYTHING becomes a weapon and Mass Casualty Accidents occur. IT’S NOT THE ITEM THAT IS THE PROBLEM, IT’S THE INDIVIDUAL. Take away guns, cars, knives, axes, pencils, rocks, and deranged individuals will still find a way to kill.
