A quiet Friday afternoon turned violent at a Southern California aviation school when two women were shot inside an office on campus, in what officials are calling a case of workplace violence.
The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. at the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Inglewood, a city just southwest of Los Angeles. According to Inglewood Mayor James Butts, the suspected shooter is believed to be a former employee of the school.
One of the victims is in critical condition. Both women were rushed to the hospital following the attack, the Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed on X (formerly Twitter).
A massive police response quickly surrounded the campus. The suspect fled the scene but was later taken into custody after police located a vehicle matching the description shared by Inglewood police. Officers from the LAPD detained the man during a traffic stop, though no further details about his identity have been released.
In the immediate aftermath, the campus went into lockdown for over an hour as law enforcement swept the area.
“This is a peaceful campus,” said Chris Becker, president and chief administrator of the school, during an interview with KABC-TV. “It’s a nice community of students, teachers, and staff. Safety has always been a top priority here, especially as an aviation-focused institution.”
The Inglewood campus is one of several operated nationwide by Spartan College. Located just a mile from Los Angeles International Airport, the facility trains around 500 students in aviation maintenance and related technologies.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting. Inglewood police are continuing to investigate.
