Student Shot in the Head at Over Campus Apartment in ‘Targeted Attack’

Police hunt suspect who lay in wait before shooting student in the head

A Georgia Tech student was executed inside a luxury apartment building in Atlanta over the weekend in what authorities say was a cold, calculated attack—not a random act of violence.

The victim, 23-year-old Akash Banarjee, was shot in the head inside The Connector Apartments, a high-end off-campus complex known for attracting wealthy college students. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

Atlanta Police say Banarjee’s killer didn’t break in or act in a moment of passion. This was premeditated.

“This was no accident. This individual knew exactly who he was looking for,” said Atlanta Police Homicide Commander Andrew Smith at a Wednesday press conference. “He waited, confronted, and shot him point-blank. That’s not random—that’s targeted.”

Surveillance Footage Suggests Suspect Scouted Location

Police released surveillance video showing the unidentified person of interest calmly strolling through the apartment’s hallways shortly before the murder. At one point, he pauses for several seconds—possibly listening for movement.

“It’s not a glitch in the video,” Smith said. “He stops. It’s deliberate. He knew what he was doing.”

Moments later, a loud bang echoed through the building.

One frightened resident called 911 after hearing the gunshot. “There’s someone lying outside my door,” the caller told the dispatcher. “I don’t want to open it—I don’t want to get involved, but something bad happened.”

The suspect, believed to have entered alone, reportedly fled through a stairwell moments after the attack.

Luxury Building, Violent Crime

The murder has shocked residents of The Connector, a building marketed as a secure and exclusive residence for Atlanta’s student elite. Rent for a single-bedroom unit can exceed $2,000 a month. Yet this high-rise haven was no match for a killer with a plan.

The building’s management has remained silent since the shooting. No public statement, no comment. Residents are demanding answers—and security upgrades.

“This is supposed to be a safe place for our kids,” said Jonathan Reece, a local parent whose daughter attends Georgia Tech. “If someone can just walk in, wait around, and shoot a student in the head, then what are we paying for?”

Victim Had Criminal History, Police Say

While police are not releasing full details, Commander Smith confirmed that Banarjee had a criminal record. Investigators are now digging into his background and digital footprint, looking for possible motives or connections to the shooter.

That hasn’t stopped the outpouring of grief from classmates and faculty at Georgia Tech.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our students,” said the university in a statement. “This tragedy has shaken our community.”

Suspect Still at Large

The person of interest remains unidentified. Despite the violent nature of the crime, police say he is not considered a danger to the public—suggesting this may have been a personal dispute or retaliation rather than a broader threat.

No arrest warrant has been issued yet, and authorities are urging the public to come forward if they recognize the man seen in the surveillance footage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Atlanta Police or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

A Wake-Up Call for Urban Campuses

The murder raises uncomfortable questions for parents, students, and administrators alike: If a student can be hunted and killed in a luxury building steps away from campus, what does safety even mean anymore?

“This is the new face of crime in our cities,” said retired law enforcement officer Marcus Taylor. “It’s not just happening in alleyways or abandoned buildings. It’s happening in upscale apartments, and it’s hitting kids from good families.”

The investigation is ongoing.
