Hidden Staircase Found Under U.S. Capitol (Video)

A viral video is reigniting interest in America’s hidden history after Congressman Tim Moore revealed a secret staircase buried beneath the U.S. Capitol floorboards—linking modern-day lawmakers to the earliest days of the Republic.

“This is straight out of a National Treasure movie,” Moore joked as he peeled back a wooden hatch in the floor of the historic Lincoln Room, revealing a dusty spiral staircase that hadn’t seen sunlight in centuries. “Construction started in the late 1700s, and there are all sorts of little hidden passageways.”

From Founding Fathers to Forgotten Corridors

The Capitol’s construction began in 1793 when President George Washington laid its cornerstone. But according to Moore, some parts of the building still hold secrets from that era—literally under lawmakers’ feet.

“This staircase may have been used by British troops when they torched the Capitol during the War of 1812,” Moore said. “That’s the story that’s been passed down here.”

British forces famously set fire to the Capitol, the White House, and the Washington Navy Yard in August 1814 during the so-called Burning of Washington. According to Capitol historians, many of the building’s earliest rooms and passageways were damaged, repurposed, or sealed off during reconstruction.

Inside the Lincoln Room

Moore’s video tour begins in the Lincoln Room—a quiet, wood-paneled space just off Statuary Hall, once the main chamber of the House of Representatives.

“This was where Congressman Abraham Lincoln would sit by the fireplace and read letters from home,” Moore noted, referencing Lincoln’s brief service in Congress from 1847 to 1849. “It’s one of my favorite rooms to bring visitors to.”

But the real showstopper is what lies beneath.

“This right here,” Moore said while pulling up the hidden floor panel, “is what most Americans never get to see.”

The congressman revealed a staircase descending into shadow. Though access is limited and details are scarce, Moore said it likely led to storage chambers, servant paths, or even escape routes used during emergencies.

A Nation’s Birthday and Its Buried Past

The rediscovery comes as President Donald Trump plans a sweeping celebration for America’s 250th birthday in 2026. Just days after retaking the presidency, Trump signed an executive order launching a White House task force to prepare a “monumental tribute to our nation’s founding.”

That plan includes restoring historic landmarks, building new monuments honoring America’s Founding Fathers, and hosting parades stretching from Arlington, Virginia, to the National Mall. The U.S. Army will kick off its own anniversary next month, with a military parade showcasing 250 years of American defense.

“These hidden rooms and staircases remind us how deep our history runs,” Moore said. “We walk the same halls—sometimes the same stairways—as the people who built this country from the ground up.”

More Than Just Stone and Marble

As Moore’s clip continues to rack up views online, Capitol insiders are calling for a broader effort to document and possibly open more of these forgotten spaces to the public.

“We’ve always known there were stories under our feet,” one senior Capitol aide told us anonymously. “Now we’re starting to see just how many.”

As America nears its 250th birthday, one thing is clear: there’s still more history to uncover—sometimes right beneath us.
