“I gotta go!” — but not fast enough to avoid jail.
A former college cheerleader turned office worker is facing assault charges after she bulldozed through police barricades and plowed her car into a packed Maryland street fair — all because she was late for work.
28-year-old Kai DeBerry-Bostick, once a spirited face on the sidelines for Bowie State University, turned Main Street into her personal freeway in Laurel, Maryland, Saturday morning. Her excuse? She had to get to her job in Virginia — and wasn’t about to let the law, or the lives of innocent pedestrians, get in her way.
Bodycam footage captured the shocking encounter that played out like a real-life temper tantrum on wheels.
“I need to get out, I gotta go!” DeBerry-Bostick barked at a calm but firm officer who was manning the barricade at the city’s Main Street Festival.
The officer repeatedly warned her she couldn’t proceed. But instead of taking a lawful detour — or the cab he offered her — she got out of her car, tore down yellow police tape with her own hands, and gunned it straight into the festival crowd.
“You cannot move this,” the officer said.
“I might have to,” she replied, before punching the gas.
That “might” became a certainty. Bodycam video shows her vehicle clipping the officer as she barrels ahead, coming within feet of a man pushing a baby stroller. Bystanders can be heard screaming in the background as the chaos unfolds.
Fortunately, the officer only suffered minor injuries — but police confirmed the festival was immediately thrown into panic.
She didn’t get far.
DeBerry-Bostick was yanked from her vehicle and arrested on the spot. She now faces serious assault charges and remains in custody in the local jail.
The Laurel Police Department praised their officers’ swift action, saying in a statement:
“Thanks to their rapid response, no festival-goers were harmed. One officer sustained minor injuries after being struck by the vehicle.”
What makes this more outrageous? DeBerry-Bostick isn’t some clueless teen. She’s a 2021 Bowie State graduate and honor student. Once celebrated by her Zeta Delta sorority for landing a job with a Maryland tax firm, she now finds herself celebrated for all the wrong reasons.
Even worse, Saturday’s street fair had already been rocked earlier that morning by a propane tank explosion that injured a vendor and forced officials to cancel the planned parade. But DeBerry-Bostick’s entitled stunt turned disruption into danger.
This isn’t just another example of reckless driving — it’s a clear case of entitlement, arrogance, and complete disregard for public safety.
One question remains: When did “I’m late for work” become a license to drive through a police line?
Should more be done to hold people like this accountable?
