Trump Issues New Warning Message to Walmart

President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Walmart, urging the retail giant to absorb the costs of new tariffs instead of passing them on to American consumers.

In a recent Truth Social post, Trump criticized Walmart for attributing impending price increases to his administration’s tariffs, stating that the company should “eat the tariffs” given its substantial profits. (The Washington PostBusiness Insider)

“Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain,” Trump wrote. “Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected. Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, ‘EAT THE TARIFFS,’ and not charge valued customers ANYTHING.”

This admonition follows Walmart CEO Doug McMillon’s announcement that the company plans to raise prices on certain items later this month due to the financial strain from tariffs. Despite a temporary reduction in tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, Walmart maintains that the cost pressures remain significant. (Business Insider)

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that Walmart has agreed to absorb some of the tariff costs, aligning with the president’s directive. However, Walmart has not publicly confirmed any changes to its pricing strategy. (AP NewsThe Guardian)

The situation underscores the broader economic impact of the administration’s trade policies, which aim to rectify longstanding trade imbalances. While the tariffs are designed to bolster domestic industries, they also present challenges for retailers reliant on imported goods.(Business Insider)

As the debate continues, consumers are advised to stay informed about potential price changes and the ongoing negotiations between the administration and major retailers.

  1. …or try to shop at WalMart as little as possible. They pay employees so little that most are eligible for food stamps, which of course they redeem at WalMart. Quite a racket if you can pull it off.
